I brought this up in the other thread, but I think it's worth it's own thread.  I actually have been thinking about this topic for a while,  over the holidays I mentioned to a friend a certain beer that would have been on my Mt. Rushmore.  With that I've been thinking the list over a bit.

 

I guess when I came up with the idea I was thinking of the best beers (obviously this is subjective, but for me the best beers are something enjoyed by most people).  I'm going to try and select different beer types and try and include something from each part of the state.

 

My best beers would include

 

Evo's:  Rise Up Stout

Union:  I'm on the fence between BlackWing Lager or their Skipjack Pilsner.  Once I decide on the other two I'll narrow this down.

 

Obviously I need something hoppy,  and then maybe another well rounded beer.  

 

I'm totally cool with starting a Mt. Rushmore for  the most "iconic" or Maryland Beers as well.

I think Oliver Brewing's 206 IPA deserves consideration.

Chesepiooc's Pineapple Hefenweizen.

 

Not that I can drink much anymore, but I liked it enough to suffer through some kidney pain for it. Fun summer beer.

If it's best, not iconic, and we're talking styles of beer that are most popular among craft beer drinkers, I'll tentatively go with this:

Burley Oak Search and Destroy (Triple IPA)

Goonda O.Ji. W/ Vic Secret (Double IPA)

Evolution Rise Up Stout (bourbon barrel aged is also great!)

Burley Oak J.R.E.A.M (kinda cheating because there's a bunch of these and none are consistently made / available, but this is a tremendous sour series)

It's your list and you can do what you want, but I would suggest swapping out one of those IPA's for something else,  just for a more rounded lineup.

I know you're not much of an IPA guy, but IPAs are so much more popular than other styles, so I think it makes some sense to have two.

I also love IPAs so that influences my list similar to you going with a pilsner or lager where most craft beer people wouldn't.

If it's limited to one per style then what makes most sense IMO is an IPA, stout, sour, and a big and/or adventurous beer like something barrel aged or a barleywine or something with a unusual things like lactose, peanut butter, etc.

Think of it like this, if somebody is new to craft beer and is looking for something good to drink I don't think the best choice is a hop bomb or a sour.  That's not going to appeal to them, I would recommend they start with something less extreme like a Wheat  or maybe a Lager, if they are looking for something more bitter maybe a Pale Ale.

Ok, that's the case for some, but I'm not sure why that matters here.

I don't think it makes sense to play to the lowest common denominator.

That's like arguing for a Filet-O-Fish over sushi or salmon or whatever because more people will try the former.

SouRed from Hysteria Brewing is/was one of my favorites in a long time...but it's already gone off tap.  That's one of the problems of getting attached to beers in some of these new taprooms.  Miami Weiss at Jailbreak same deal/fate.

 

Surrender Dorothy down at 7 Locks is pretty yummy too.
