Meh. He obviously wasn't Locksley's first choice (Charles Kelly), and if the reports about Dennard Wilson and Derrick Ansley were true he wasn't the 2nd or 3rd choice either.

Seems most of Hoke's college background has been coordinating under Steve Spurrier (at both Florida and SC), who isn't exactly known for holding his defenses to high standards. He also doesn't appear to be the recruiter that his brother is.

Not sure what the appeal was, other than being a warm body who was willing to take the job (and at whatever pay MD could offer).

Here's the non-paywall article from IMS on the hire:
https://247sports.co...ator-128238889/

Hoke, 61, has spent much of the past two decades coaching in the NFL, including the past three seasons as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive backs coach. He's also a college veteran, having coached at seven schools, including jobs as defensive coordinator for Florida and South Carolina. Hoke succeeds Andy Buh, who spent the past three years leading DJ Durkin's defense but wasn't retained by Locksley.

The expected hiring of Hoke, who also reportedly had spoken to the Washington Redskins about their defensive backs coach job, hasn't been confirmed by the university. He'll join Locksley's fast-growing coaching staff, which now includes seven on-field assistants. He also adds 16 years of NFL experience to Locksley's youthful crew.

“Our coaching staff is vital as we build our Maryland football family. Each coach has an excellent football mind and more importantly, pride themselves on the mentorship and development they provide to our student-athletes. The varying range of experience these coaches bring, along with several having local ties, will be a major benefit to our program," he said in a press release last week.

Hoke spent five years as the defensive backs coach for a stingy Chicago Bears defense from 2009 to 2014 before moving on to become South Carolina's defensive coordinator for the 2014-2015 season. That was his only foray back into the college game since 2000, when he was Steve Spurrier's associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Florida. When Spurrier left for the NFL, Hoke did too, spending the next seven seasons as defensive backs coach for the Houston Texans. In his last job as a defensive coordinator, at South Carolina under Spurrier, he ran a 3-4 defensive scheme labeled with a "read and react" philosophy.

In light of recent events, here's a very noteworthy addition to the UM football staff:

Coloradoan: Colorado State football losing strength coach Ryan Davis to Maryland

Young, good experience...   been around, has his Master's.   They say the strength coach is one of the most important hires, even more so with MD right now.

While I doubt he overlapped with Locksley, the Alabama background is always a plus. I'm guessing he knows what he's signing up for....through no fault of his own, Davis might become the most heavily scrutinized S&C coach in college football.

Grad Assistants = paper pushers, coffee getters? Havent been to a college practice?

Grad Assistants are just that, assistant position coaches. For UMD in recent history....

Alex Garwig ran the Scout Team Offense to make sure the Starting D got great looks

during practice

Caleb Rowe was very involved in helping the QB's out this season

Micah James when at UMD would work with all the reserve offensive lineman at practice

while  Coach Bowen worked the starters.

They are very involved with drills, film breakdown and study, even on campus recruiting.

Do not confuse a GA with some classes TA. Far and away a different animal.

Chris Lingebach (106.7 The Fan) tweeted this regarding former Redskins DB DeAngelo Hall:

DHall lost DBs job at Maryland waiting to hear from the Skins: "Coach Locksley out at Maryland, he gave me a couple days, but it wasn’t enough time for me to actually figure out if I had gotten the Redskins job or not, so, consequently, I get neither."

Well, that's life...   he had something in-hand, and was waiting for something 'better', so he loses both.

I wonder what the timing there was (i.e. before Robinson was hired in Dec?) It would make more sense if Hall was working with Robinson, since he has zero coaching experience. Seems like he'd be someone who could recruit the area well though, maybe even be the guy who took Beatty's place as their main recruiter in the VA Tidewater region.

Interesting hire made today. They got Matt Fyle, who was the Asst S&C Coach at Oregon to be the assistant under Ryan Davis. I was confused at first and thought it was Oregon's head S&C Coach, Aaron Feld. But one look at Fyle's pic cleared it up. Feld is the guy you see on the sideline on TV occasionally with the handlebar mustache, while Fyle looks like a guy you expect to see fending off White Walkers.

Like Ryan Davis, Fyle has a bit of an Alabama connection too. He spent several years working under Feld at Oregon and Georgia, and Feld implemented the same program at OR that he learned when he was at Alabama, while Mario Cristobal was also there as the OL Coach.

Former Terp player Delbert Cowsette will be the DL coach. He spent the past several seasons coaching that unit at Albany. He was a DT in the Vanderlinden era, so he's known Locksley for about 20 years.
