Deadspin: San Antonio is Winning Because Teams Forgot How to Defend the Mid-Range

"The Spurs have figured out that there is a tactical advantage buried in the most tactically unfashionable shot in the game, and have embraced their mid-range aces’ ability to score from the least-desirable places on the court. Conventional wisdom and league-wide trends be damned, it’s working."

Interesting

Kind of like the Ravens offense with Lamar.

No one sees it, so it’s successful.

A lot of defenses nowadays are designed to entice opponents into taking those mid-range shots. I'm sure there are some adjustments made for the Spurs, but I imagine defenses still play into their hands to some degree. Unlike the NFL you don't get a whole week to prepare for your next opponent in the NBA (until the playoffs), so that may factor too. Also noteworthy is that while the Spurs shoot the fewest 3s per game in the league, they also have the highest percentage of made 3s.

For now, the reports of the Spurs' demise into a lottery team would appear to be premature.
