Sucks for the kid but it has no impact on the team.

Released today. Had a 7.79 ERA in Norfolk, coming back from second Tommy John surgery.

Signed with the Nationals after he was released by the Orioles. That should settle the MASN dispute.

That Britton trade. Yikes.
Sad that the Schoop trade was arguably the best trade since we got Villar.

Unlike the Machado trade, at least there is someone on the current roster and performing ~replacement level.

Diaz will eventually have a healthy, somewhat productive year in AAA his fifth time around and get a call to the big club. He's only nearing 25.... don't want to start that service clock too early or he may hit free agency before he's 40.

The great Dan D may have done almost as bad as Syd Thrift and Syd did not have any Machado’s to trade.

At least Syd landed Melvin Mora who ended up being a very useful player for 10 years.

Was a last second throw in. Thrift gets no credit for that acquisition. The big piece coming back from the Mets in that trade was an entirely different person than Thrift thought he was trading for. I've never heard of any other deal like that. Worst execution of a trade in the history of the franchise, if not the sport.

Leslie Brea was supposed to be the stud arm from that trade. Like the Braves trade with Atlanta and Luis Rivera, I don't think Brea was ever healthy.
Mike Kinkade and Melvin Mora were older prospects who didn't really have a place on their team. Mora just happened to really pan out.

Rivera from Atlanta at least was a good prospect, but like you mentioned was damaged goods with a shoulder injury. If I recall correctly, Atlanta didn't let Thrift look at his medical records (trade came together late) but Thrift went ahead anyways.

Actually I just googled it and Brea was lying about his age, was 5 years older than he said he was. Guess that isn't directly Thrift's fault. Not a different person entirely like I was remembering. A 26 y/o at AA is a non-prospect but at 21 y/o at AA could be promising.
Mora remains a last second throw-in so that somebody could play SS the remainder of the season. No credit to Thrift for seeing something in him before he blossomed.

I really feel like Thrift's health was failing at the time, plus instead of a computer, he was relying on a gigantic binder, which I guess was his trademark back in the day.
I think what you may be remembering, in regards to the wrong player, is the story that made the rounds, that Thrift called the Blue Jays GM, asking if outfielder Shawn Green was available in a trade. The Blue Jays GM said I don't know, you will have to call the Dodgers.
Green went to the Dodgers about a year before. Evidently Syd had not updated his binder.
