Yep, this story will keep rolling for quite a while.  So much of this mess is tied in with the AAU summer circuit that I don't think we'll see anything like it in college football.  Not that I think it is clean, too much money running through it, but the nature of the game and recruiting don't line up for a scandal like this nearly as well as basketball.

So, if HOf coaches are going to be implicated and we can assume Pitino isnt part of that (since he has already been caught), that doesn’t leave many guys left.

That’s not a long list. Maybe it could go back to when guys like Larry Brown, Calhoun and Tark were coaching but we still don’t see a long list there.

Unless Pitino is the only guy, a major coach is about to get his record tainted (or further tainted).

Going to be interesting to see how this plays out. I don’t agree it’s goinf to hurt the sport though. I think most people assume all major college sports are corrupt.

They already got the #9 player in the 2018 class to pass up college (was a Syracuse commit) before this announcement.

They are almost apples-to-oranges with regard to their issues. Both need fixing, but the best solution for one is probably not going to help the other much.

 

Of course, the real reason college football doesn't get as much mention for its issues right now is because it's making the schools (the power conference schools, at least) a lot more money than basketball. So they will make a few comments about how much they care about players' well-being, and maybe an occasional band-aid to make it seem like they are trying, without putting their golden goose in harm's way. But if the feds had uncovered (or ever do uncover) a similar scandal in college football, that'll change.

Gatto's atty also said Under Armor paid $20,000 to recruit Silvio De Sousa to sign with Maryland and Arizona offered $150,000 for Nassir Little. De Sousa is at Kansas, Little at UNC now. Goal is to make all of college hoops look corrupt.

This is the defense that Gatto’s attorney will be mounting. Their game-plan appears to be throwing the sport under the bus, showing how corrupt the world of high-major recruiting is, how pervasive breaking NCAA rules has become all while emphasizing one, simple point: The coaching staffs at these universities and, thus, the universities themselves wanted these things to happen. They weren’t victims of fraud. They were complicit, willing participants that happily kept their head in the sand as they profited off of the free labor Gatto and company provided them.

 

And they’re right.

The story from Day 1 of the first trial of the college basketball corruption scandal is that Jim Gatto and his lawyer are going to freely and willfully toss around names and identify who he worked with, what players he paid and what coaches requested that it happen.

 

That matters, because of this rule change the NCAA announced in August: “People charged with investigating and resolving NCAA cases can accept information established by another administrative body, including a court of law [or] government agency.”

 

Any evidence that turns up during this trial or any of the other trials stemming from this FBI investigation can be used by the NCAA to punish people breaking their by-laws.

 

So if you are a coach and you worked with Gatto, Dawkins or Code during the period when this investigation was happening, you should be worried.
