If the Royals made Eric Hosmer or Billy Butler available over the winter, the Orioles would collectively do somersaults all the way to Kansas City to talk trade. But why the Royals would make Hosmer or Butler available?

Thought that was an interesting snippet in Roch's morning blog.

Hosmer's been disappointing this year, I don't expect them to shop him but I could see that happening. No chance they move Butler, IMO, he's got a very team-friendly deal.

Either would be very enticing targets for the Orioles if made available. I'd still prefer to target Headley over Butler, considering his good defense at 3B and Butler is strictly a DH, but Butler isn't much further down the list of good targets.

Wish they would have went after Butler before this year. He wouldn't have been cheap per se but there was a stigma attached to him because he's a DH that didn't have great power. Now a lot of those doubles have turned to homers and his value has to be up considerably.

Like any other trade, what would we have to give up to get them?

Despite his struggles as a 22-year old, Hosmer is a beast and will be a very good/great player, in my view... and if we can deal for him (BIG IF) I'd be all over that. I felt even more strongly about Hosmer being an excellent Major Leaguer than I did Machado at the time of their draft.

Last year I was driving through Nebraska into Iowa cross-country, one of the KC pundits proclaims Eric Hosmer the best Royals prospect ever even ahead of George Brett. Take that FWIW.

KC needs pitching in the worst way... so we'd be trying to discuss Arrieta or Matusz or Britton, plus Schoop. Not sure KC matches up well with us though, as the sort of pitching talent they'd want would be someone like Matt Moore. I don't see KC eyeing anyone else but Bundy, and the O's won't do that. So... it is likely a moot point.

And your last point is what I think it always get back to in these fantasy trades with the system we currently have in place.

I don't see Hosmer being available.Butler probably is, but again, I think he's brought up his value a good bit.

I would give any of our pitchers not named Bundy for either of them. Hosmer IMO will be the better of the two, even though he has struggled this year.

And KC is probably saying we only want Bundy... to get something, you have to give up something.

I wouldn't give up Bundy or Machado but I would definitely be trying to find a fit for either one of them if possible.

I love both of them. Would definitely be interested (at the right price).

If they like some of our young pitching, a deal could be there.

I said a couple months ago a BMat for AGordon/Butler deal framework could be there. Gordon has to be coming up on FA soon though.

Yeah can't see that happening and even more so after seeing their respective contracts. Alex Gordon is under contract until 2015(with a 2016 team option). Billy Butler is under contract until 2014 (with a team option for 2015)
