I dream of the day the Orioles actually take the international market, Latin America in particular, as anything more than a waste of time. I guess we should applaud them for at least trading away the money for talent rather than just letting it sit there and go to waste, though.

A lot of Ks but he is 22 and only in Delmarva's division.
A 27th rounder two years ago.
It will be interesting to see if the O's lack of interest in doing anything Internationally will change at all when the ownership changes.

WhiteSox are going to sign Luis Robert.
They'll use the pool $$ to reduce their tax by a little.

Bar is set low when we ask for applause in this situation....but you are right, it's better than nothing.

They are doing a really good job of turning around their crap system in a short period of time.
When they deal Robertson, they will just keep adding to it.
Dumb of them to have held onto Quintana but maybe he can get this back on track and have good value this
July.

What's the success rate for international slots?

What's the success rate for international slots?
"International slots" aren't quantifiable. They aren't ordered draft positions, just allotments of money. It'd be like asking "what's the success rate for all the $20 bills we are paying Chris Davis but not any of the $50 bills?"
Teams get assigned "slots" that add certain amounts of money to their pool of total money they are allowed to spend internationally.
I think what you really are asking is "how cost-effective is the international market?" I don't think there is a definitive answer for that, but obviously the Orioles have long felt that spending money in that market is not worth the squeeze.

Totally stupid to not participate in the market, but this is an Angelos thing. Baseball has become an international game everywhere but Baltimore.
Peter is a real visionary.

The good news is the farm system is loaded, so we don't really need to sign talented players.

Better than just not using it, but damn...
The new rules that go into place for this signing period might make the pool slots more valuable in trade. Teams now have a hard cap, and no longer are allowed to go over and pay a tax on the overage (and potentially be barred from future signings over $X). They simply cannot go over their allotment.
I also haven't seen how much of their allotment the Orioles traded for either of these guys. Hope it was next to nothing for Wheeler, as he's pretty clearly a bum. Wotherspoon has a bit more potential as a possible bullpen arm. He at least has very good numbers as a reliever in the minors, despite being a bit on the old side. Wouldn't be surprised to see him in our bullpen in the near future, no idea how effective he'll be once he gets his shot though.

Tyler Frohwirth, son of the late Todd, was traded to the O's from Philly on July 2 per MLB.com transactions.

Sounds like it was 3 slots...
Tyler Frohwirth, son of the late Todd, was traded to the O's from Philly on July 2 per MLB.com transactions.
That makes it 4 then.
White Sox----we got Katz.
Philly---Tyler Frowirth is he a pitcher
then the latest 2...
Wheeler from the Dodgers and Wotherspoon from the Yankees.
Peter saves money....and we get more of the deep depth acquisitions that are drowning us this year.

Was Katz this years slot bonuses or last years?

Not certain, but I think last year's. I don't think you can trade future bonus pool slots, since they aren't assigned until a couple months ahead of each July 2nd when new periods begin.

Yeah, I was under the impression Katz fell under last year's slots too.
I want to say bonus pools are announced in December or January every year.

I think you may be right. They made the trade in May but it was for the period ending June 15.
My bad.....but still a joke, we do not even participate
The Orioles have acquired left-hander Alex Katz from the White Sox in exchange for international signing bonus slots #45 and #75, the club announced (Twitter link). The total value of those slots adds up to $756.3K (from Baseball America, here is the full list of slot values for the 2016-17 signing period, which ends on June 15).
I keep hoping for the announcement that we trade Peter G. Angelos and Sons for a bag of popcorn, then we trade Dan D for a slot in the independent league draft. Now that would be real progress.
