Guess him Tolliver over Zach Phillips because Phillips has been so bad this year to date, but I don't think Tolliver has any hope of being more than a hot-hand type for a couple weeks while we search for a real left-handed relief pitcher.

He's allowed a 611 OPS to lefties this year and was at 664 last year.  He's 28 and in AA.  And, he isn't even currently a hot hand, he's given up runs in 4 of his last 5 appearances (11 H, 3 BB, 3 HR, and only 2 K in 6.1 IP).  Phillips' last two outings have been even worse (4 H, 4 BB, 1 HR, and 2 K in only 0.2 IP), but had 8 scoreless outings before that.

A pretty baffling decision.

My guess, he is the freshest.  Look for this left handed spot to be a revolving door.

It'll be pretty hard for him to be worse than what Matusz was doing.

So I think there's an interesting note here.

The 2009 draft was bad.  Really bad.  It was the Hobgood draft and there was little projection across the draft.

The best hope several years ago was guys like Mike Ohlman, Tim Berry (didn't realize he was with the marlins now...really struggled the last 2 years) and Ty Kelly (interesting, just got his first 5 MLB ABs with the Mets this year).

Givens was a failure at SS.

....but Givens (2nd rd) has certainly righted his personal ship in the Orioles bullpen and Tolliver (5th rd) is the next (and last) guy to have any production for the Orioles out of that draft.
