7+ ERA and hasn't completed 5 innings since his second start of the year. Can't go silent against this guy and can't let McDermott implode and give away the game immediately. Irvin better be sharp if he's needed.

Really wish it was Burnes pitching today.

You should get used to it because it's going to keep happening, from yesterday:

Brandon Hyde added that the Orioles are going to give Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez an extra day of rest "as much as we possibly can."
"At least for the next month or so, we're going to try to give those guys an extra day when possible," Hyde said.

I get the extra rest. But not when you have to run a rookie out there who hasn't even shown he's good enough at AAA yet other than he does strike out a bunch of guys.
Maybe they figure he can muddle through while the bats will beat up on Cabrera. Still don't like this. If you want to rest Burnes then fine. Why not start irvin?

I'm fine with McDermott getting a spot start, especially over Irvin. Just would've spaced it differently. If you start Burnes today and Rodriguez tomorrow, you don't need a spot start until Saturday. Possible you've acquired a new SP by then and if not, you get McDermott that day then back to Povich or Suarez the next day and Burnes available again for the DH.I get the extra rest. Once we add a SP or two, I'm more comfortable giving Burnes and Rodriguez time. But right now with the dearth of pitching in the rest of the rotation we should be avoiding the #4 and #5 (and in this case #6) SP spots as much as possible.

Like Povich, McDermott's command leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully, the umpires up here will be kinder to him and he can attack the zone with his strikeout stuff. Otherwise, it's going to be a grind.

The O's seem to be playing down to their competition this year.
Good news! I saw a dog today.

You got me curious, but it seems fine. .600 winning % overall, it's .597 (37-25) vs teams over .500 and .622 (23-15) against teams under.

Baker been really good in his last 4 outings. Guess he's odd man out right now especially being a righty.

Maybe McDermott stays in the pen if the stuff looks good in shorter stints
That makes sense, seems like his likely future anyway.

Would've liked to see Norby.
Me too but think that's why they called him up instead of Holliday or Mayo. They are just going to use Urias.

It's a small sample but Urias has a 1.016 OPS in July and has always been better against righties. Maybe Norby gets a shot vs a lefty.
