Good luck with that, Elon. This ain't building electric cars. No matter what direction you decide to go with Twitter, there are people out there who will hate you for it.

From April 5th:
https://www.cnn.com/...rson/index.html

The Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX CEO's net worth is now about a stratospheric $300 billion, according to Forbes' real time rankings of the world's wealthiest people.
That means the 50-year-old Musk has a more than a $100 billion lead over second place Jeff Bezos, the Amazon (AMZN) founder and owner of Musk's space rival Blue Origin.
The superlatives don't stop there. Musk, the newest board member of Twitter (TWTR), is worth more than double the wealth of legendary investor and Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB) CEO Warren Buffett, who started investing in 1941 when he was 11. The 91-year old Oracle of Omaha's net worth now stands at "only" about $125 billion.
Musk is also worth significantly more than the combined fortunes of former Microsoft (MSFT) CEOs Bill Gates ($136 billion) and Steve Ballmer ($100 billion.) Ditto for Google (GOOGL) co-founders Larry Page ($120 billion) and Sergey Brin ($115 billion.)
Is Musk a sports fan? He could buy all 32 National Football League teams (currently worth more than $112 billion, according to data site Sportico) and still have almost $190 billion left over.
And Musk is worth only about $35 billion less than the gross domestic product of his native South Africa, whose GDP is $335 billion, according to the World Bank. Musk's net worth exceeds the GDPs of Colombia, FInland. Pakistan, Chile and Portugal.
Musk is clearly in uncharted territory when it comes to wealth. He is the richest person ever, according to Forbes.
Still, some historical experts argue that other American industrialists from the 19th and 20th centuries, such as John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, as well as monarchs and rulers like Mansa Musa of the 13th century Mali Empire and Augustus Caesar -- who reigned from 27 BC until his death in AD 14 -- may have had more wealth when adjusting for inflation.

Elon has a talent for seeing a floundering company with a lot of potential, being run by complacent individuals with no vision, just coasting with no ambition.

It's what he did with Tesla. He saw a great idea, being run by idiots. And he took it to the next level. I believe that's his plan with Twitter. He sees a platform with huge potential. I imagine he already has ideas on how to unlock it's full potential.

I'm not sure why the left is freaking out like they are. The people freaking out probably couldn't have named the CEO or board members of Twitter, or their political views, prior to Musk buying Twitter. But now all of a sudden they care?

"The left" isn't freaking out, a lot of people are. Because he wants absolute free speech, when it's already a platform with 300 million active monthly users that isn't doing nearly enough to combat extremism, misinformation and hate speech. Seems like we're moving backwards, not forward. How much more "full potential" can there be from a company that successful? And why should society want that? Some of you root for billionaires the way you root for a sports team, except you get nothing out of it, so it makes no sense.

The way powerful people are weaponizing social media to spread harmful misinformation (like that which led to a near coup of our government on January 6th) presents an existential threat. It isn't hard to see how someone like Elon Musk amplifies that threat, rather than help solve for it.

The left is indeed freaking out, he wants to open source their code and let others see how twitter was manipulating the news.

Twitter, as a company, is free to do whatever it wanted.

The irony in this post is so thick you need a steak knife. Among currently active users, I doubt there is anyone ahead of Elon Musk when it comes to using Twitter to manipulate the world.

How could you twist what I said so much, that you came to the conclusion that I was "rooting" for a billionaire?,

I simply gave my opinion on why I feel Musk bought twitter. He's a business man. He spent $40 billion on an investment. What other reason would a business man use that much capital, to procure an investment, other than to make changes that he feels makes the platform better, and make him more money on his investment ?

And you're right, a lot of people are freaking out... I guess it's just a coincidence that every single one of them leans heavily to the left....

The problem this world has, is they've allowed politicians turn this country specifically, into a political climate where bipartisanship simply cannot exist. And if you dare say something the other side of the aisle strongly disagrees with, it's labeled "misinformation", or "hate speech". Both sides are guilty of it.

And if you're on one side of the political aisle, and think only the other side has been capable of using social media for the purpose of spreading misinformation to manipulate their followers, you're just willfully ignorant.

Go look back at Twitter circa 2016. There was some true hate speech, misinformation, threats and harassment going on the platform then, and much of it had absolutely nothing to do with politics. People just don’t want to see it go back to that era, and given Musk’s lack of clarity beyond saying he doesn’t like Twitter’s current moderation practices, they’re concerned.

Should a Bond villain really be allowed to be in charge of something so divisive?

I believe the concern is the "belief" that that twitter is using a special algorithm to decide what gets more viewing posts, and what doesn't.

Sooner or later now, this is going to come out as fact or urban legend.

You cant tell me there is no heavy users from the left using twitter to push their agenda.

Bond villain made me lol and seems pretty apt here.

Billionaires generally get to do whatever they like, including in this case, pay little to no taxes many years while becoming the wealthiest person in the world. Oh and that becoming process includes billions in government subsidies, something he claims to be against.

He also claims to be a huge proponent of free speech yet has been happy to use his power to attempt to silence enemies of his. One has to wonder if he is more of a proponent of the spread of hate speech and misinformation than anything else.

The other issue here to me is much bigger than Musk and it's not about him as a person. The issue imo is that in this time of extreme concentration of wealth, we're seeing more and more of our primary mediums for news and propaganda being controlled by the uber wealthy. That is not great for a democracy. A democracy in our case that was attacked last January 6 and is in great peril due to a continued attack by the same people / political party. A democracy that even if it is to survive is looking more and more like an oligarchy. Musk and Bezos are two prominent men in that trend.

Of course there are. Same as there are heavy users on the right using Twitter to push their agenda.

Not only is the media controlled by the Uber wealthy. The gov’t itself too. More than half of Congress is millionaires. Makes you wonder who our elected officials are working for. It’s not you and I. That can’t be good for democracy.

January 6th was a terrible day. Their actions clearly misguided. But an upheaval of the system is necessary. At a minimum, amending the constitution to get with the times. The last proposal of an amendment that was approved was over 50 years ago. The only one proposed since was making D.C. a state for electoral college representation in 1978.

A lot has changed since then.

Good post

It should be noted, that not all of those millionaires was born with money, some were, and I dont have the exact figures, but there are many that were not millionaires until spending 10 years in that job paying 175K a year job.
