What does everyone do to kill time when we're not talking Orioles. Or what do you do to pass the time in August when it hurts too much to watch another 9-20 month roll past on the calendar?

My biggest recent devotion (in addition to binge drinking, golf, and BSSC sports) has been keeping a saltwater fish tank. A reef tank hopefully. I had a small 30 gallon tank for years, but I made the decision to seriously upgrade last summer. Ended up buying a used 125-gallon tank, which is 5-feet long and looks pretty damn big in my tiny Canton rowhome. I've been in the process of getting it all set up since about October. I actually drilled holes in the tank to create drains to a smaller tank which sits underneath it where I have all the filtration and heaters and stuff running. I'm still stocking it with fish and coral, but it looks pretty good so far. It's an absolute drain on the wallet and maintenance is quite time consuming, especially trying to do things the right way to get long-term success with my tank, but I've been enjoying it.

What's everyone else into?

I bought an old 16' aluminum jon boat on Craigslist about a month ago. It was severely neglected and in really rough shape, as it used to sit in the water at a marina 24/7. The paint was very pitted and there were lots of leaks (I had to replace about 15 rivets).

I'm documenting my progress with the project over at TinBoats.net. Here is a link to my project page with photos:

Wow that looks like a ton of work! What are your plans for the boat once its restored? Fishing? Hunting? Looks great so far.

Being a poor grad student (at least for the next 4 months) I don't have too many hobbies.

I play BSSC Softball & Volleyball, play Baltimore Beach Volleyball, Baseball whenever possible.
Also play a lot of video games. MLB 12: The Show (obviously) but also Uncharted series, Battlefield 3, Diablo 3 soon.

I also write an O's blog haha so that takes up most of my free time.

I have "semi" gotten back into sports cards (mainly baseball/bball/football). I try and find people looking to sell lots/mini collections/etc for a good price and then flip some of the bigger name stuff on eBay and then hold on to the "prospects/diamonds in the rough" and hope they pan out to make a profit on them.

Industry has got much smaller with some card companies being bought/going away (Fleer and Donruss) and then other companies still in the game not having license to produce in all sports.

Still not worth buying boxes, so you have to pick up stuff on the net after people already have broken down boxes/cases.

Fishing with the kiddos. :)

I have a ton of hours in this thing already and I'm just getting started. It's hard work, but rewarding. I've never taken on a project as big as this before.

Great idea for a thread...

I am in serious need of a specialty hobby!

All I have for now is beer... drinking different varieties, visiting breweries.. I would love to get into some home brewing someday.

Wow, that's awesome, but one (two-part) question:

Are you married, and if so, is she as into it as you are? There's no way my wife would go for something like that, although my kids would absolutely love it.

I actually play in Israel's top-level fastpitch softball league. I am an occasional starter at 2B and OF, and I'm the team's utility man. I play on the 5th place team (last place in the top tier) out of 10 teams. Currently, I have an .808 OPS with 11 games left in the season.

I also coach baseball and softball. My boys' 11-13 year old team is currently in first place in our regional league, having come in 1st in the national fall tournament and 3rd in the national winter tournament.

And I play the APBA baseball board game fairly regularly with my son and my best friend (GlennGulliver on here). My son and I are nearing the completion of a season we began with the 2006 player set. We'll probably order the 2012 set and start a new season next year. Hopefully, the O's will keep this up so they will be better than 2006. They finished with the worst record in all of baseball in our current season.

There aren't a ton of options in the area, but I made it a point to get out on a decent hike this morning. Up at 3, at the Old Rag trailhead at 6, and at the summit by 9:30 this morning. My knees may not cooperate at work tomorrow morning, but that circuit is well worth the trip.

I play Baltimore Beach as well, though only one night a week this session. Glad Rash Field was still available for them this summer.

I'm not, but my girlfriend lives with me.

She's into it, although not as much as I am. Well maybe that's not accurate. She enjoys having the tank and the end product just as much as me, but I like the work that goes into the building of the tank and maintaining it a lot more, which is good because it makes sure that stuff gets done.

Haha. Of course, how could I forget! I missed my opportunity to hug some giant sequoias and redwoods in California, though. I just looked at them. It will be one of my biggest regrets.

I've just started playing softball. It's a slow pitch league, but the games are very competitive. I'm mostly a reserve OF/DH, but I've been going to every practice. Hoping that it pays off soon and I get to start a game or two. Decent at hitting, but my fielding I still need to work on.

I play in a couple softball leagues, although they aren't super competitive. BSSC in the city (I coach our team). We make the playoffs every year, but haven't gotten a championship yet. Also play on a team at work. We've got a huge league (18 teams) but my team is one of the worst, we're usually end up about 4-5 teams from the bottom or so. But they do A- and B-division playoffs.

I play a ton of other "sports" in the city as well, BSSC drinking leagues basically. Kickball, volleyball, football, and wiffleball. Basically at least one of those seasons are going on throughout the entire year, giving me something fun to go do for an hour or so every week and then people to go drinking with afterwards.

Just saw this. Hobbies include sports, fantasy sports, traveling (only within the US, I generally dislike international travel for a variety of reasons), reading and television.

My #1 goal is to attend a game in every single major league stadium. I have 5 left.

I also play on a softball team that is generally ranked towards the bottom of the standings, but we have fun.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note
