I don't like this at all. What's next track-and-field?

Oh well, It's not like wrestling has a long history in the Olympics or anything.

Ratings and things like that. Why? Just dumb.
Mike and Mike had a good conversation about this today..Golic is a big "real" wrestling fan and hated to hear this news. He feels its as pure a "sport" as you can have and in a lot of ways, he is right.
Greenberg's thought is that sports like golf, tennis, baseball and things like that shouldn't be Olympic sports...his thought process is that any sport where a gold medal is the pinnacle of your sport, should be an event.
But if it is just another award and not as important as winning a major or something like that, that it shouldn't be an Olympic event.
Its an interesting perspective IMO. For me, I think the Olympics are a chance to show the whole world how great of an athlete you are, so i don't mind those sports being in...but I do see that side of it and do think its a very valid opinion.

That means the IOC believes that modern pentathlon is a better sport to have in the Olympics than wrestling.

Somewhere, somehow, Vince McMahon is behind thisTerrible decision. You have to wonder what this will do to the sport as a whole.

That said, wrestling gets terrible ratings (when it's even shown) and almost no attention online. Wrestling takes a large venue, requires a boatload of athletes and nobody cares about it. Really the only reason to keep it is tradition.
Most of the criticism about the decision has focused on the "why not cut modern pentathlon" argument. But that sport had 72 participants in London, took one day (for each sex) and was played in venues that already exist for other sports. Wrestling has 300+ athletes and pretty much takes the entire two weeks to run.

Shouldn't number of participants be taken into account? I mean, the reason given for baseball's exclusion was lack of participation around the world.Really surprising.

Good points, but there's nothing that says wrestling needs to be held in large venues. It's not like football where you need an 100 yard field, goal posts, etc. It can take place in a gym and you just need a mat. I still thinks it's a bad decision for sentimentality reasons but if people don't care, I can't entirely fault the IOC's for it's exclusion. It just seems to be some recent additions aren't really Olympic sports.Really surprising.

Sheik humbled him old country way.
Humble Jacques Rogge like he's Jacques Rougeau.
EDIT: And I can't post the Iron Sheik's tweets regarding this due to language, but definitely go to his twitter page https://twitter.com/the_ironsheik and check them out. And follow him. And if you don't have twitter, sign up specifically to follow him. It'll be the best decision of your day.

Haha, he is a great follow. I loved his random, stupid tweets during the NFL playoffs.Humble Jacques Rogge like he's Jacques Rougeau.

You need a lot of space for warm-ups, etc. In order to get the events done, things have to move quickly, so there is a lot of action behind the scenes. You need a good-sized facility for that. I think some of the recent Games have combined events and facilities. They might hold wrestling, judo, ping-pong and badminton in a convention center.
The number of competitors, I think, is an issue as well. Those 300+ wrestlers mean 300+ more dorm/hotel rooms. It seems like there is a real effort to make the Olympics a more modest affair.

I think that's a factor, but not the only factor.

Maybe I underestimated some especially with the Olympic Village space. I still think the facility itself can be mangeable. I appreciate the feedback, I'll admit I hadn't really taken that into consideration. You need a lot of space for warm-ups, etc. In order to get the events done, things have to move quickly, so there is a lot of action behind the scenes.
