I wanted to get a thread going to talk about the various odds and ends going on around the NHL right now.

First up the Phoenix Coyotes

http://www.azcentral...stand-firm.html

Glendale is set to vote today on another potential deal.  This could be the one that ultimately sends the Coyotes elsewhere(I feel like I've read that countless times before though).  The latest I hear is it would be Seattle.  I mean it would almost have to be somewhere in the west, after going through with realignment you don't want another Winnipeg situation.

Next up the NHL and the Olympics

http://espn.go.com/n...-sochi-olympics

Nothing officail yet, but it sounds like the NHLers will get to play in Sochi next year.  This is a good thing,  so I'm glad that they are going to make this work.

The Isles are set to buy out Dipetrio's contract.

http://espn.go.com/n...ers-source-says

He gets 1.5 million  a year for the next 16 years even if he never plays another NHL game again!  Those mega long term deals don't always work out.

On a related note the Canucks traded Corey Scneider to New Jersey over the weekend partially because they know it's almost impossible to move Luongo and his dea.

Sigh. We were in the running towards the end. Didn't want to go 5 years.

I think the Olympics is an almost must for the NHL and I wish the Olympics would return to their amateur roots. The casual fans really get into this and hopefully that will translate more to the NHL.

I guess I'll be the goalie for the Flyers next year.  Its all they can afford.

I'm really curious where they are going with this.

I thought they were going to amnesty Bryz? Shouldn't that free up a ton of cash? They saved like 2.5m per year going from Briere to Vinny.

They did, but approx 40% of the cap is tied up in defensemen.  And its not a stellar group.

Glendale City Council approved the lease.  Looks like the Coyotes are staying put.

What's up with Pronger and his deal? They are almost the Redskins of the NHL financially (them and NYR) seems like all the big deals bite them in the ass and then the cheap guys they develop are stars.

LTIR but I have no idea if it counts against the cap at the beginning of the year.  He's never going to play again.  Its not a secret to anyone in these parts.

True shame because he was an awesome player.  I have a jersey of his.

Nah, if he's on LTIR they pay it but it doesn't count against the cap. Teams have been doing it for years to circumvent cap space.

Yeah I was hoping the Caps were gonna get in on that but I was a little worried how he was going to hold up, risk/reward I guess. I thought they were crazy for the Bryz contract though, I liked Bob.

I read somewhere that a new part of the CBA might be that LTIR had to be accounted for on the cap at the beginning of each cap year.  Its unconfirmed though.  You can LTIR them immediately after and have it not count against.

Pretty positive the final verdict was that LTIR remained unchanged. They put like 14 other ways in to limit cap circumvention in though, so something could impact it.

They're now the Arizona Coyotes (because, as I saw someone put it, probably on Deadspin, Phoenix didn't do shit to keep them).

Wish they were the Seattle Salmon or the new Quebec Nordiques, though.

6 outdoor games, come on NHL there can be too much of a good thing.   Gimme the winter classic on New Years Day and the Heritage Classic in February, no need to over do it with outdoor games.

I totally agree as it is, I'm not sure how popular the outdoor games will be in 10-15 years when they've already done it in many cities, but this is just one way to wear off the novelty faster.

I noticed it's the "Coors Light Outdoor Hockey Series"... so I bet the advertising dollars around it probably had a notable impact on this.

Either way, it's too much, I agree. Watered down for sure.

Good news everyone: There are names for the new NHL divisions!

Bad news everyone: "Pacific, Central, Atlantic and Metropolitan."

Probably should have gone with Gretzky, Lemieux, Roy and Roenick.

You're on the right track with naming it after players, but here's a better list.

Gretzky, Howe, Orr,  Lemieux

One other positive of realignment is that ever team will have at minimum a home and home with every other team in the NHL.
