From out October Q&A with Jim Callis, Baseball America:

Baltimore Sports and Life: “LJ Hoes had a .861 OPS after the All-Star break, and finished his season at Bowie with a .792 OPS overall. Hoes was also moved off 2nd to a corner OF position. Combined between Frederick and Bowie, Hoes had 9 homers, and 24 doubles over 502 ab’s. Do you think he can slug enough to stick in LF, or do you think the O’s should move him back to 2nd with the focus of improving his defense there?”

Callis: “Hoes can hit, but he’s kind of a tweener. I don’t think he can cut it defensively at second base and I don’t think he has the true power you really want in a left fielder.”

Starting in CF tonight for Bowie. MASN's Steve Melewski reported yesterday (http://www.masnsport...his-future.html) this could be a permanent change.

If he can handle Center defensively, I certainly like him better there.

Have to admit that I was a bit surprised to see Avery move up to Norfolk and Hoes kept at Bowie, but I guess it makes sense if they want to take some pressure off of him while transitioning to CF. Regardless, I think he has the bat for CF, hopefully he makes the transition smoothly.

He started really slow last year too, so he may just be a slow starter. Also, he's probably focusing a lot on defense right now because shifting from LF to CF can't be easy.

Heard from a few people now that Hoes actually looks half-decent in CF.

Not sure if this is 100% true as I have not seen him myself, but that's certainly pleasant to hear.

4-4 with a HR last night (1st of the year).

Up to .324/.423/.410 for the year. 17 BB and 18 K, 8/11 SB.

If he keeps this up for another month or so, I'd like to see him moved up. Still no power but has now played in 125 games at Bowie and put up a line of .308/.387/.408.

Thanks for this... good to see the walks being basically even with the k's. I could get behind moving him up.

Now 6 for 43 (.140 baa), .434 OPS.

When Markakis went down, I had advocated for Hoes' promotion. Looks like he is going to need some time to acclimate to AAA first.

Shame on us for letting LJ Hoes fall this far without an update the last 10 days or so. He has been on fire.

.500/.622/1.122 over his last 10.

Up to.330/407/.737 at Norfolk after a tough start. The guy seemingly makes the adjustment at every level and has always been a good OBP guy. For whatever reason he seems to get lost a little bit. He's the same age, actually slightly younger, than Avery and played pretty much every step of the way and put up better numbers but people seem to love Avery.

Hoes is the guy I want to see get the next promotion to Baltimore if needed, not Avery. I think Hoes is probably a little better fundamentally and in eventually will be the better pro. Consider this less of criticism of Avery and more praise for Hoes. I'm very happy with the progression Avery has seemingly made at AAA this year as well.

I've watched Hoes this past week and been fairly impressed. His bat is really coming around.

His defense in CF however has not been impressive.
