ESPN: Michael Phelps vague about future

http://espn.go.com/o...k-2016-olympics

"I don't know what's going to happen in the future," Phelps said Monday. "I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow."

We've never heard this before in the sports world.

He has a tough life after all -- following the Ravens Super Bowl run, showing up to Orioles spring training, and golfing. He's two-and-a-half months older than me, I can't imagine being in his position -- I'd probably be pretty bored even if I didn't have to worry about $ and could do as I pleased.

He didn't have his accomplishments without being competitive.

After the last Olympics, I'm sure he mentally was tired of the training, and it was easy to just mentally let go.

However, each day after that brings him closer to the next Olympics and another challenge. Another opportunity to win some medals and claim public consciousness.

It's a nice position for him to be in. He has nothing to prove to anyone, but if he wants the challenge - it's there for him.

Is it blasphemous to dislike Michael Phelps?

I'm asking for a friend, of course. :)

What else is he going to do. I've  always thought he would swim competitively again.

Seems weird and  inconsistent coming from someone who loves "greatness" in  athletes.

Didn't see Bnickle say that. But I do like DiMaggio's approach of never playing in an Old-Timers game, not wanting fans to see his eroded skills. It's always tough for these athletes to balance getting out at the right time and fighting that competitive itch. I think for example that John Elway could've retired after his first championship, go out on top, but he made it even more memorable by ending his career with two straight SB wins.

That's probably fair.

I just think he seems like kind of a douchebag personally.

Taking nothing away from his talent, mind you.

Im busting your balls. Obviously, you're allowed to like and dislike whoever you want. Im not a fan of Tiger off the course, but I like watching him play and respect his greatness.

Living in Baltimore, many of us have heard stories about Phelps over the years. However, he has been in the spotlight since he was literally a kid. As it is, he is still only 28 years old.

Not that he gets a free pass forever, but I won't hold things against him from his early 20's as to the guy he is now.

He does stuff for the community, he loves the Ravens, and he's represented Baltimore on the World stage. That's good enough for me.

As his coach has said, it's the structure of his life which has caused many of the problems. When he's training for the Olympics, he doesn't seem to have a problem. It's after the Olympics, when he's made some poor choices. "Work hard, play hard," I'd say. As I've mentioned earlier he's my age, I haven't had to deal with people taking pictures of my poor decisions and posting them on the Internet for the world to see. Still, I don't think that's much of an excuse. I do agree that we really shouldn't hold stuff he did 5+ years ago against him, hopefully he's learned from it.

Baltimore Sun: Michael Phelps 'busier than ever' but still shooting down rumors of a return to swimming

http://www.baltimore...0,1033156.story

“I've said nothing about a comeback," Phelps told Bill Green of WCSH in Maine on Tuesday. "I have said nothing about a comeback. It's everybody else opening their mouths and saying comments that they think I'm going to do or think that I said. I've never said anything publicly."

Phelps will swim in '16. Why wouldn't he? Same reason Paul McCartney is still touring. They only have a certain shelf life to do what they do and make multi-millions doing it. Why waste it and let that pass by? They can relax after.

He can continue to get endorsements outside of competing for the Olympics. Not to mention, he's got enough money, maybe he doesn't care enough to get more? I wouldn't be surprised if he did, but being a musician is a bit different than being an athlete. As in the shelf-life for a musician is a lot longer and even during your down-years, people still want to hear you. Who wants to see a 70+ year old swim?

ESPN: Michael Phelps back in drug program

http://espn.go.com/o...-doping-program

Michael Phelps has rejoined the U.S. drug-testing program, the strongest sign yet he plans to return for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Phelps was among the athletes who underwent doping tests in the third quarter, the period ending Sept. 30. He was tested twice.

He's been training pretty hard in the area too I've heard. Much more than he was a couple months ago.

I think "retirement" must be pretty boring for him, just ask Michael Jordan. He isn't going to be able to compete at such a high level forever, so might as well now.

Yep basically. I hear he was basically asked well what are you going to do now that your 15 minutes are over? You going to coach? And he had NO IDEA so he started training again and postponing that conversation a couple more years.
