Not sure where to put this, so I figured I'd start a new thread.

Bowlsby says commissioners of the 5 major FBS conferences have "unanimity" that drastic change is needed in the #NCAA

Of course it is. What are they talking about though? Replacing Emmert? Evolving the players rights/recruiting violation languaging and rules? Expanding playoffs? Where to begin...

Common sense and consistency would be a great start.

From some of the stuff I saw on Twitter today it sounds like there may be some serious talk of the "super division" semi-independent of the NCAA everyone always says is inevitable.

That disappoints me.

If a new regulatory body could somehow strike a more equitable balance between the well-being of student athletes with making money off of them, I'd be hopeful. But I have a feeling that is just wishful thinking.

It is, I'm sure of it. Because there is no chance that they are doing this for any reason other than to make more money for the athletics departments at these universities.

As long as the "super-division" is only for football, I don't really care.

Just don't f with the NCAA Tournament and basketball.

I'd be kind of excited about that.

Imagine if there were no cupcake games.  Only the top 100 or so schools across the country were in the league, every team played 8-10 difficult games in the regular season then maybe a 8-game playoff for the championship.

I think that'd be awesome.  I don't know if Maryland would fall into one of those top-100 school, though I think they would, but it'll definitely make the top more interesting.

I still can't tell if this new division is for all sports, meaning the end of the NCAA Tournament, or just football.

Hope just football.

No matter what happens in basketball, the tournament with the best teams isn't going anywhere.  May be called something different, but there will be a big tournament at the end.

I'm more concerned about the elite basketball schools from the Big East, AAC, A10, WCC, MVC, etc. that won't be invited to said tournament if this new division is formed.

While it doesn't spell out what might or might not happen to other sports, everything I've read would seem to indicate that this is for football only.

As of today, it would only be 64* schools. It's based on what conference you're in (ACC, B1G, Big XII, Pac 12, SEC), so UM would always be part. I suppose there is a chance we might see one last bit of expansion, as the few Have Nots with something to offer make a last-ditch effort to pimp themselves to join the Haves, but I wouldn't count on it.

* There's been no direct mention of Notre Dame. I would assume they would be among the cartel as an independent, but maybe this would also be the move that finally forces them into full conference affiliation.
