ESPN: A&M to add nearly 20,000 seats

There's renovations then there's this. This looks like as massive of a facelift as I've seen. It's hard to argue with the timing given Manziel, the move to the SEC, and their best season in a while.

Also hard to argue right now that they didn't make a good decision by leaving the Big XII (U of Texas shadow).

Good for them. Texas teams always get great fan support, and great amounts of boosters. Looks like they'll knock off Neyland as the 3rd-highest capacity stadium in college football once this is done.

I know Michigan fans weren't happy about adding premium seats some years back, guessing many of the traditionalists will feel the same way at Notre Dame.

The multi-use buildings, which will rise slightly above the stadium, will include classrooms, a career center, dining hall, event spaces, recreational sports facilities, and a digital media center — all integrated with new, premium stadium seating and club space for football fans.

The $400-million plan — the largest building project in the university’s 172-year history — will turn the area around the stadium, now used solely for about seven home football games a year, into a central place for academic and student life. The three buildings will be attached to the east, west and south sides of the stadium and will add up to 4,000 revenue-generating seats to the “The House that Rockne Built,” among the country’s most revered stadiums.

The new buildings will not obstruct the view of “Touchdown Jesus,” the mural on the Hesburgh library north of the stadium that has become one of the most recognized end zone views in college sports. But the changes could rankle some alumni who won’t be happy with a move away from tradition.

The stadium renovations will increase seating at football games to about 84,000 by building on top of the rim of the stadium bowl. There will be several levels of indoor and outdoor club seating on the east and west sides of the stadium, a new press box, broadcast booths, and hospitality areas.
 

The south building will include a club and lounge that can accommodate about 350 fans during game days.

Glad I went there when I did. There's something nice about the simplicity of a bowl, even one that has been expanded and added-to over the years.

The scoreboard will be 47 feet tall and 163 feet wide and will be finished by A&M's first home game, Sept. 6.
The University of Texas has the largest collegiate scoreboard in the country. It's 134 by 55 feet for a square footage total of 7,370. A&M's scoreboard has a square footage of 7,661.

The Aggies are renovating Kyle Field in two phases. The first deals with the east side.  This fall, actual attendance for home games will be 106,511. The finished stadium will have a capacity of 102,500, once the west side has been finished. The capacity drops because A&M is building wider seats on the west side and more suites.

The second phase will focus on the west side. Work starts on this side of the stadium once A&M finishes its home schedule in November.

Because the university has yet to seek bids, it's unclear how much the proposed project would cost. But in addition to connecting the lower bowl, the source said the primary objective would be to improve and add suites as well as fan amenities such as concession stands and restrooms. The project, however, is not expected to substantially increase Memorial Stadium's seating capacity of 82,000; instead, it would aim to create better and more comfortable seating throughout the stadium.

Let's not leave out Austin Peay's big stadium renovation.
