Ovechkin has a week to sign a new deal before free agency begins. Anyone a little nervous that they don't get something done? Or is it done in principle and they are just waiting for the expansion draft to end to make it official?

From what I gather, if the Caps already resigned Ovi, then they would have to protect him from the expansion draft, meaning they couldn't use that spot on another player they want to protect. By not having him under contract, not protecting him, theoretically the Kraken could select him, but then he could not sign, and become a free agent in a week and sign with Washington.

Just hope they aren't trying to be too cute with the greatest player in the history of the franchise, and hope the new deal is announced in about an hour when the draft wraps up.

Vanacek taken by the Kraken. Not sure how to feel about that. Probably their starter. Can't think there is much depth behind Samsonov since they kicked the tires on Lundquvist and Anderson.

Kind of a bummer.  He played pretty well throughout the season after getting thrown in the fire with a shaky at times defense.

Also, kind of a bummer that they're deciding to run this ship into the ground with Lavs. Literally one or two seasons left, max, of contending. Where is the urgency?

No, it's done. Was just put in a drawer so they could protect an extra player.

Did the same thing with Oshie for VGK.

Worst case scenario for us. We couldn't protect both, and with Samsonov being in and out of the lineup being a knucklehead we didn't have a chance to deal one of them. Would have helped us much more had they taken one of the D and saved us some cap space.

I'm still not convinced Samsonov is better than VV. Kinda reminds me of Varly versus Grubauer. One was spectacular but inconsistent. Shutout one night, 4 goals the next. The other was more consistent but more like 2 goals every game. Same result in the end, 2.0 GAA but if you're scoring 3 a game, you are 2-0 with one and 1-1 with the other.

Dreidger from FLA will be their starter, but even he said today it's not really a #1 and #2 in the NHL it's more of a 1a and 1b cause the load is too much to survive the playoffs after playing 70 games in the regular season like old school workhorses.

It was an interesting strategy for SEA. We will start seeing what side deals they had now, couldn't announce them til after 1pm today. But if it were me, I would have taken all of the big names, ate some of each of their salaries and then traded them all for picks and prospects. You wouldn't compete this year, but you'd be scary deep and ready in 2-3 years. They coulda got 5 first round picks had they took/traded Price/Tarasenko/Giorandino. Hell, I was wondering if WAS would have done Kuzy/Samsonov for Price and some salary. Would have relied a lot on McMichael to be the 1st/2nd C but Price is about as good as it gets in net.

Free agency begins in less than 24 hours. Ovi deal still not announced.

Ummmm….give him all the money and let’s go.

Also, Holtby getting bought out by the Canucks after a rough stretch. Only played 21 games for them.

Calm down. :) It’s already done. About 4/$40m. The closer they announce it to the expansion draft the closer it is to circumvention. Just like Oshie it’ll get announced tomorrow most likely (first day of FA).

I think it’s fairly likely Holts takes a pay cut and comes back.

Yeah see, it's official now. 5/$47.5m

Now the next questions are how much does Sammy cost on a bridge deal? My guess is like 2/3 years at $2.5m per.

And then how much would Braden sign for to come back as a backup/mentor?

We have $3.6m left after filling those two open roster spots with kids from the minors but I think we need to shed one more RHD realistically.

Fehvers should get the 3rd LHD spot but we still have 4 RHD with TVR and I don’t think we can afford the depth luxury this year.

Depending on what we do with Kuzy it could change things. If we get Panarin from NYR or Tarasenko from STL we get the production but it’s a wing not a C. McMichael is about ready for the spot, with Backy at the other top C spot. But we have no depth there and then we have one too many top 6 wings too.

More moves need made. This puzzle doesn’t fit.

Welp that escalated quickly. Pretty much all the backups off the market. Including Holtby. All took in the $2-2.5m range per year.

Caps shut out. Gonna be a problem if they are forced to trade for one.

Didn't think Holtby would last on the open market long. Caps need to shore up the D though. Patrick Roy would struggle behind this D.

The D talent is fine. The system sucks. Dillion was probably the best DEFENSIVE player back there, which is why he was the one that drew interest, but being so aggressive and running the offense through them at the point has led to a lot of turnovers and rushes. Terry Murray used to run a system like this back in the day, when we had Hatcher, Iafrate, Cote, etc. But an inconsistent goalie that gives up softies here and there is going to be a BRUTAL fit for it.

Adding Fehver back there will help cause he's pretty solid defensively, but offloading one of those more prissy offensive guys and playing TvR would probably balance more.

OR having forwards that are better both ways would help. A huge chunk of our top 6 plays zero defense, so that never helped things. Trading Kuzy could clear a lot of that up in one move though.

So things changed pretty quickly when I went to soccer practice.

After Sea shocked everyone and signed Grubauer to a big deal they had too many goalies. So they traded VV back to the caps for a 2nd round pick. One of the two 2nd rounders we got for trading Dillon. So if you’re keeping score, the caps netted an extra second round pick for losing Dillion and his salary and are back to the same goalie tandem we had last year.

Solid start with the rookie on the board and two more for Ovi.

Awesome start to the season. Rags were still salty, it turns out, and still got their asses kicked.

I don’t know what the record is, but I wonder if Ovi would set the record for shots on goal in a season this year or next as they will feed him often as he closes in on Gretzky. Like Kobe attempting 500 shots in his last game.

Maybe, but he was very efficient last night, scoring on 2 of 3 shots taken. His best chance at the record, other than staying healthy of course, is to play within the system which is designed around him. He's a PP wizard, and he cleans up with great anticipation. I feel like trying too hard to score goals will result in the opposite.

True. When he was closing in on 700 It seemed like they fed him the puck constantly and it took a while to finally net the one.
