Round 2 - Pick 65

Outfielder - Southern Mississippi

Toolsy switch hitter with helium after bursting onto the scene with a great second half of the college season.

Signed for $800,000 (~$200,000 underslot) according to Jim Callis.

Surprised. Curious where the money is going now. For the first time I wonder if the entire pool gets used.

We should probably question how you get to 800k.

I think it's fair to say, if someone had suggested that Trimble would be an under-slot kid, that would be laughed at.  For consideration in this draft, he'd likely be the most-over-slot kid the Orioles would spend money on.....so they likely had to have a number that they knew he was asking for.

In order for them to get compensation for the pick, they have to offer Trimble 40% of slot value....so that's about 400k.

In this draft, if you thought he was an over-slot kid, would you start below slot?  If Trimble doesn't sign and they word gets out that they only offered him 400k, that would be embarrassment like we saw when word leaked out they were requesting arbitration eligible players defer some of their salary.

....a formal offer of 800k would seem to be maybe half of what was thought to be his number but twice what the minimum would be for compensation.

If you think he was a reach pick and 800k is the fair value, ok, but if he's an over-slot kid (and everyone thought so), then 800k is the 'get compensation' offer and Trimble surprised them by signing it.

If you think back to the Astros 1-1 Aiken pick, this is similar.  In order for them to get compensation, they had to offer Aiken a contract.  The Astros offered 40% of slot and Boras rejected it.  Had Boras accepted it, the Astros would have signed Aiken and never drafted Bregman.  You have to offer a contract to sign to get the compensation.

Another option could be that his physical revealed something fairly significant (in terms of injury or risk of injury) and the risk of losing his 2022 season and having to come back for another college season or whatever to try to get his value back up was more risk for him and you cut the deal today to get into a professional system and start working.

Either way....there's something going on with 800k.

A lot of people did think he would be overslot. At the same time, he was picked 65th. He wasn't in Keith Law's top 101, BA had him at 104, and he was 148 on the MLB ranking. $800k is slot value for about pick 77-78 so it's not exactly outlandish for him to take that kind of amount, or to be offered that kind of amount. If you want to punt the pick just take Chandler and offer him double slot or the whole Cowser savings, you know he won't take it, smart people will know better but most people will think you did your best offering a million over slot.

Maybe something more will come out about this one day, maybe not, but with nothing more there's no basis at this point for making this some weird conspiracy theory. And yes, this is a weird conspiracy theory at this point, the rankings facially support the bonus even if it seemed like he had the leverage to get more.

It's not unusual if they talked to him before the draft and asked what it would take to sign him if they drafted him in that spot.   These guys whose signings have been announced already most likely agreed to a number before the draft and the only thing holding up the announcement was the physical and the crossing of the t's and dotting of the i's.

From the Orioles: Outfielder Reed Trimble, their third pick in this year’s draft, underwent a left (non-throwing) shoulder labral repair last week. His return to play is estimated at six to nine months.

Odd timing.  Did he do this training?  An injury might help explain away some of his putrid performance, but if he had a nagging injury during the season then I'd have expected the surgery to have been done two months ago.

One of those random bumps that you know isnt good. Feel like shoulder surgery is the best case scenario.
