Testudo Times: Jalen Smith selected 10th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 2020 NBA Draft

https://www.testudot...ts-phoenix-suns

For the first time in seven years, a former Maryland men’s basketball player has been selected as a lottery pick.

Forward Jalen Smith was taken No. 10 overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2020 NBA Draft Wednesday night.

Smith is the fourth former Maryland men’s basketball player drafted over the last three years, following in the footsteps of Kevin Huerter, Justin Jackson and Bruno Fernando.

I am happy for Wiggins.   I think OKC is in a rebuild and Aaron may get a chance to get playing time and see what he can do.

The amount of picks they have in the coming years is ridiculous.

Wiggins has a skill set where he can succeed. Would think a key for him is maintaining the mental approach he had in the 2nd half of last year.

I think the key with Wiggins is aggressiveness and taking shots from a solid base.  Some guys, can shoot from all angles.  Wiggins is a much more effective shooter, when he is set.  I think he needs to average 40% from 3, and near 50% inside the arc, to get 25 minutes a game.  I hope he can do it.

Glad to see he got picked. With all the picks OKC has over the next several years I have a hard time seeing him stick there, but he's in the league and hopefully he gets a good opportunity to show what he can do and latches on somewhere.

Phoenix has elected not to pick up Smith’s third-year option, making him set to become a free agent next season.

Hasn't done a thing. Surprising, IMO. Wish he had stayed, but this is exactly why you take the money while you can.

Cant say Ive followed him at all after being drafted. Think hes a smart bball kid, athletic enough. Just think he needs to become a man. In a strength and body sense. I think Id still bet on him having a sustained NBA career. If only as a role player.

I'd say it's still possible, but a lot less likely at this point. But he's still just 21. He just needs playing minutes and good health at this point. But that's been an issue.

Washington should buy low. Give him a cheap 2 year deal after a trade (wouldn't have to give up anything) and develop him. That'd be a good fit actually.

Honestly even at MD I thought he was a little overrated.  Really solid player, just didn't live up to the 5* hype for me, and if I were an NBA GM I would've taken him probably towards the end of the 1st round.

Can't quite put my finger on it, the physical tools are there, I just don't think I see the drive needed to be any more than an average pro.  Which would be an improvement on where he's been thus far.

In general, this is how I feel/felt about him too. But he really flashed at times his final season in College Park. Really, that stretch beginning with the Wisconson game in Madison in Mid-January, through the rest of league play, he was pretty dominant.
