Sounds like Henrik Lundkvist is going to ink a 1-year $1.5 million deal with the Caps. He’s been my favorite goalie since he entered the league, so I’m super stoked for this. Would love nothing more than to see him raise the Stanley!

Yeah this has been set up for a couple days, just couldn't announce it until today. Really good choice for a backup.

Holts is going to get 2 years and something like $9m from Vancouver.

We’ll always have “Holtbeast” and “The Save”. Crazy to think he was shelved to start that playoff run in the first round.

Maybe Lundqvist will have a Marc-Andre Fluery type of rebirth when he went to Vegas.

New coach, new goalie. Interesting offseason.

King Henry is coming in to be the veteran backup. Most teams have a 1A/1B thing going right now, the workhorse days have shifted, and next year with the weird schedule they are saying teams are going to need to have 3 goalies that can rotate. The intent is that Sammy is the 1A and gets a little more time to develop though, I could see it being a 60/40 or 70/30 split though. Won't be like Holts when he was out there 90/10.

Holtby really didn't get that much, only saved $3m on the deal, and not a long term commitment, BUT that $3m is important when you are only $5m under the cap.

They used the money Kempny being on LTIR all year (surgery, out 8 months) to sign Justin Schultz from PIT. I think it's too much, he's a 2nd/3rd pair kinda guy, gets hurt a bunch too. BUT he's a RHD and those are kinda hard to find. We are loaded with lefties, so if new coach is a big like handed D guy (which it seems he is) I guess I get why they spent it.

Hoping they can trade Panik and free up a little extra money to do something interesting. Even if it's just extending guys that need it.

I'm shocked Holts didn't get more. Pandemic's impact on the cap screwed him.

Caps also drafted Hendrix Lapierre in the 1st round. He was a top-10 talent that dropped due to a concussion issue last year. Sounds like it had to do with a neck/back issue that’s been rectified. Gotta love that!

Yeah everything I've read about him, he sounds like a total stud. Hopefully he can stay healthy. Not like the teams in our division hold back on the physicality.

Backstrom 2.0. The concussion knock he got was they thought he had two back to back, but the second one may have just been a neck injury and Covid cut off his chance to come back.

Yeah it looks like the flooded market of UFA G is going to keep the prices down. No one is getting more than $5m per right now, and the couple that are over that are the MVPS, Vezina winners and cup champs.

I'm still shocked Schultz got $4m. It's only 2 years so it's not crippling, but they must think he'll bounce back to that Norris type year he had a couple seasons ago. Lavi really wanted a RHD, and then they needed a top 4 with Kemps out, so I think they rushed it, and I really am a believer in a couple of the young guys we have. But if you are going for the cup, depth is important too, so I kinda get it. I just hope they are also watching the long game with the cap.

I think Ovi gets his new deal done. They cut off talks til training camp, but I think that's because they are close enough there are just a couple details to iron out. He's negotiating his own deal like Backstrom did. So pretty sure they've got something in place.

I can't say I love the Schultz signing. I'm happy for him ($8M is a lot of money!) but I don't think he's a very good defenseman. I do hold out some hope that the new coaching staff can use him and create some value there, but absent that I'd rather have gone in a different direction (though what that would specifically be is harder to say and perhaps that's why Schultz got his $8M).

NHL is looking at a 52 or 56 game season this year.   If Ovie doesn't get the all time goal record it won't be through any fault of his own.

82 games missed for lockout, another 34 missed for a partial lockout, 13 games out the end of last season for Covid, and another 30 this season.  That's almost 2 full seasons of games missed!  The 82 would have been his rookie year, and the 34 were certainly in his prime years.

Lundqvist will not be joining the team. A heart condition has come to light. 😔

With Wilson and now Chara, no one should want to get in a scrap with this team.

Can we change the thread name? This was confusing to me, as they won't be playing any games this season in the year 2020. It's killing me with my OCD. EDIT: Thanks!

Remember when Holts was a rookie, or even before he came up really and I was telling you, he was the one to watch, better than Grubs or Varly? Then we had to go ups and downs with him, and watching him develop into what he became...

You ready to start all over again with another young goalie? So stressful...and I hope it works out, cause i know they have young pieces and if they lose confidence in him, they will make a major trade for a goalie, but it'll cost us WAY more than we should give up...like more than trading away Forsberg, and we ALL know how I felt about that one.

I believe in Samsonov. He has an opportunity to get off to a good start tonight IMO. For confidence reasons, I might play him the first two games, then give him off either Sunday or Tuesday against Pittsburgh.

I've got good hopes, but I really don't know honestly. I had inside info with Holts...but haven't heard anything about any of the current crop. He's got about all the pieces in front of him he could ask for, but new coach likes offensive defensemen and uses them heavy in his offense, which generally leads to more shots on goal going the other way. I think with the crazy depth we have, we have enough defensive guys we can put a solid lineup out there in front of him...but so many unknowns right now. We've seen this core in an offensive system...they can be DREADFUL defensively. BUT they do have a few more specialists now than they did now, so hoping guys like Hathaway, Haglin, Chara, etc. will help out with that.

Watching the young goalie is fun.  It's all the stop gap goalies we had while waiting for some of these guys that drove me crazy.  No more Vokoun's!
