Davis will apparently be splitting the NIL money with his teammates, which is admirable. But staging a fake recruitment to drum up NIL money is something else. Obviously can’t fault the kid for it, but it really is the Wild West out there.

I don't want to steer too far off-topic, but really, this is definitely germane to recruiting. This just dropped on The Athletic.

https://theathletic...._shared_article

It's paywalled, so I know many won't be able to read it, so I'll share this one little excerpt that I think sums up why the NCAA is not going to be the one who steps in and puts some guidelines in place (and enforces them).

In conversations over the weekend with boosters, lawyers and agents involved in the types of NIL deals of concern to administrators, few believed the NCAA has the capacity to curb the budding “over the table” pay-for-play market. Not after Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s concurring opinion in last summer’s NCAA v. Alston antitrust decision that warned: “The NCAA’s business model would be flatly illegal in almost any other industry in America.” While not legally binding, his screed all but invited future lawsuits challenging the NCAA’s broader amateurism model.

“The moment they come to try to interfere with one of my clients’ deals — the next day is the moment they get hit with an antitrust lawsuit,” said attorney Mike Caspino, who represents several football recruits that have landed six- andseven-figure deals with school-specific booster collectives. “They’re saying there’s a whole class of people (boosters) who can’t participate in the market for athletes’ NIL rights. That’d be like saying red-haired people can’t buy meat. That’s antitrust.”

Maryland’s attention now turns to Georgetown transfer G Donald Carey. He’s an Upper Marlboro native and spent the 2018-19 season at Mount St. Mary’s before transferring to Siena in 2019-20 and Georgetown in 2020-21.

He averaged 13.5 points and 2.9 assists per game last season.

How about turning their attention to a big? Do we really want to have to play that many minutes of small-ball with Donta Scott at the 5 when Julian Reese starts racking up the fouls?

One final (non-NIL) thought on Antoine Davis staying at Detroit. If he stays healthy, he has a good chance of passing Pete Maravich's all-time D-1 scoring record, with the asterisk of getting the COVID 5th year. If he goes to a Power 5 school with more talent around him, he might not get the shots he needs to do it. At Detroit Mercy, playing for his dad, getting shots will not be an issue.

And, circling back to NIL one last time, his better chances of breaking that record might be why the Chinese company wanted him to stay put.

4 Transfers if he comes to Maryland.  Wow, the game has changed.

This article pretty much encompasses my initial thoughts on NCAA enforcement at this point. Im pretty sure they can't do jack about it unless they want to break the game even further with another court ruling.

Sounds like Maryland is in a very good position to land Carey.

I like that KW and staff are sending a message to all the local kids, is that we want you at Maryland.

Carey has committed to Maryland. Big pickup for Willard and his staff.

I think you have the 5 right, but my guess is Scott plays the bigs on defense as much as Reese.    They need to find someone else with size.

Willard said he would like a deep enough to press, but we may have to wait a year or so for that.

Willard got one of his ex-Seton Hall players off the portal, G Jahari Long.

Still no depth among the bigs. But there’s two scholarships left, so I guess we’ll see.

MD would be better off with him than they are without him.

I agree, I was being serious.  He is slow in his moves and plays with his hands down, but good coaching could help.
