It is sad, but needed to be done  I wonder how many of these kids are seeing the end of their professional careers?

Ultimately it will depend how many minor league teams MLB allows each organization to keep.

If it is the reported 4 teams, you could be looking at around 50-60 minor league players per ballclub lose their job in the off-season. It also has not yet been determined how many total minor league players can be held by an organization - I am sure teams will be able to keep a "rookie" roster at their ST site, much like they do now.

Hard to believe they would give up the GCL and DSL teams.

Those players aren’t able to start at really any other level.

I don’t know that you need two A ball franchises.

What I don’t get is why the Os just wouldn’t get rid of Norfolk and just move everyone else up one level?

I wonder if I have already been to my last Keys game in Frederick.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Years ago the local minor league team asked families to host players for the summer. Being that it was rookie league ball these kids had simply no money to afford apartments short of having a bunch of roommates. So for two summers we hosted kids. First year we had a kid who played C at Oklahoma and had just come off a trip to the college WS where he hit a home run.

The next summer we had two pitchers who had just graduated HS. As an aside its amazing how attached you can get to kids that live with you for just three months.

Now how is that relevant to this topic? I had a lot of discussions with these kids about their futures and how they thought their chances were to make to big leagues. Of course, they thought they had shots as they were playing pro baseball. But they also had a lot to say about how the system works and how that affected their chances. And they all had one common point. All they can ask is to get a fair playing shot. However, the reality is they don't.

Case in point. The C (Kevin) had come off a pretty dang good season and he took his training very seriously. He was always working out at home even after his team workouts. A couple of weeks after he got here the parent team (Atlanta) signed some supposed hot shot C from Central America. Once that kid got here Kevin flat told me his chances were done. And they were. I don't think he got 10 at bats the rest of the summer. He simply didn't get to play. He said "there are just too many minor league teams.....many of us are just here to provide enough bodies so teams can work out.....they could do away with half of the minor league system and probably never change the kids who actually make the big leagues at all."
