Bummer. I was hoping expansion would lead to more sites up and down the eastern seaboard hosting the tournament. The Garden or Barclays would have been especially cool.

Don't expect to see ACC basketball tournament at Madison Square Garden until at least 2022

Syracuse University is joining the Atlantic Coast Conference next season, but fans hoping that the ACC men's basketball tournament would make its way to New York City's Madison Square Garden -- as ACC commissioner John Swofford suggested was a possibility last year -- will apparently have to wait quite a while.

Brett McMurphy, college basketball reporter for ESPN, reported Tuesday that the deadline to bid for the 2016-21 ACC's men's basketball tournaments has passed without bids from MSG. Brooklyn's new arena, the Barclays Center, also did not submit any bids, according to ESPN.

If Baltimore's new Arena ever comes to fruition, I hope the City pursues the ACCT.

Same, I doubt it would host like Greensboro does, but I could see it hosting once every so often. Geographically speaking, it's a pretty good spot especially with the recent additions. And I do see the likelihood of it going too far north.

Greensboro hosts all the time because it is a huge arena with few other conflicts in a (fairly) neutral and central area. I like the idea that it is sort-of the "base" for the conference, with other cities hosting around it.

I'm sure a new arena in Baltimore would host once a decade or so.

Greensboro always makes the most sense, with the 4 teams obviously in the region always being a huge draw.

I'm a big purist when it comes to the ACC, I still haven't accepted Florida State.

I accept them again each time they beat Duke.

Well that's coming from a Tar Heels fan. I don't mind FSU, but haven't liked the expansion since then. Sure it can be NC primarily, specifically Greensboro, but I'd like to see it moved around every 4-5 years atleast.

Every 4-5 years is definitely fair. They just don't get the crowds anyhwere else than they do in Greensboro though.

Carolina always gets the most fan turnout, and NC State is generally second. Even the few years that it's been in other sites, those schools travel very well.

In the pre-expansion days, by that I mean the Miami/VT/BC additions, I agreed. But the conference's geography is much more spread out now. Now it goes from New England to South Florida and will soon go as far west as Northern Indiana, practically into the Chicago metro-area. I think the tournament needs to rotate much more frequently and give the fans in some of the outlying locales exposure to the tournament experience. I know the Greensboro purists will say it's blasphemous, but that's my 2 cents.

In fairness, I think those schools came into the ACC, knowing that it was a very NC centric conference. Just like if you join the Big 12, you are joining a Texas-based conference.

There's NC-centric, and then there's holding the tournament in Greensboro 5 times in 6 years, which will be the case by 2015. Despite being Texas-centric, it might surprise you to know that in its 16 years of existence the Big XII tournament has only been held in Texas 3 times. Of course it's been held in KC 11 times, so they aren't exactly a good example either...but they also aren't the ACC when it comes to hoops.

Not that the ACC needs to grow its brand, but I just think it would be a good thing to take the tournament to some of these new areas in the footprint. The new additions open up an opportunity to get your product in front of potential new fans. They did it several years ago in Tampa, but other than that, a couple times in Atlanta and DC are the only places outside of NC it's ever been. New York would have been awesome, but I know it was their choice not to bid, rather than the ACC turning them down. Boston or Chicago would be cool. I'm sure they wouldn't have to do much arm-twisting to get a lot of fans to travel to Miami. If the elected leaders in Baltimore/Maryland can ever get that proposed arena past the concept stage and get it built, having the tournament there would be amazing for the city. I'd be curious to know what cities actually did bid?

I actually knew that to an extent since I went to Colorado while they were in the Big 12, tournament was held in KC (twice), Dallas, OKC. Wasn't aware just how infrequently it had been in Texas, but did know it was KC a bunch.

It was more in reference to all sports and being more of a football conference than the ACC, it applies more to that, since that brings the grand majority of the revenue. And specifically the Longhorn Network, which alienated many members of the league.

I'm admittedly biased, for sure..I just don't think it would be nearly as important (within the area) if it were anywhere else.

Again, I don't think Greensboro hosts because it is in North Carolina, but because it is a central location for most of the conference, even considering the new additions over the past twenty-plus years. It's 700 miles to Miami, 650 to Boston, 550 to Syracuse (EDIT: It's also 550 miles to South Bend). Just like the Big 12 allowed Kansas City host so much. The Big Ten tournament has been in Chicago and Indianapolis exclusively since its inception. The SEC rotates a bit more often, but always seems to come back to Atlanta. And of course, the Big East is always at Madison Square Garden. All places with large arenas in central locations.

The conference HQ are in North Carolina because it's a central location for most of the conference, going back to the conference's roots.

Their current deal ran through 2016. There's no official word on the length of the extension.

Besides New York, other cities being considered to host the 2016-21 ACC tournaments are Atlanta (Philips Arena), Charlotte, Greensboro, N.C., Tampa, Fla., and Washington D.C.

It would be funny if it ended up in DC one of these years with MD out of the conference.

By then they'll probably be sputtering along with George Mason and American, so it will still fit.
