The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Hornets planned to change their nickname since Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, purchased the team on April 14. Benson also owns the rights to the nickname Pelicans.(Getty Images)

The Hornets also considered the nicknames Krewe (groups of costumed paraders in the annual Mardi Gras carnival in New Orleans) and Brass.

Louisiana is the Pelican State. The brown pelican is the state bird and appears on the state flag and seal, and official state painting. Moreover, the Pelicans played minor league baseball in New Orleans in all but nine seasons from 1887-1959 and in 1977.

Gayle Benson, Benson's wife, told Fox Sports New Orleans recently her preference for new team colors was navy blue, red and gold.

1. Pelicans. Unique name. I like it.
2. Navy blue, red, and gold? Yawn, give me something unique.
3. Could Jordan and Charlotte take back the Hornets name?

I like that it's more NOLA in name. I think whenever these name changes happen, the first response is to say how lame it is, certainly seems that way on Twitter right now.

As the article mentions MJ did he say he'd consider changing the name back. Rumor was that BOBcats was named after original own Robert Johnson (BET founder). The NBA said in repsonse to MJ's statement, that they had final say over any name changes. It be a bit awkward I'd think to change the name back after another team had it, but after a while doubt it would matter.

Gold, green and purple.....Mardi Gras colors. I think those were the colors of the old Jazz.

I like the name. Sounds very ABA, and is better than the Hornets for that city.

Hopefully we get the Hornets back in Charlotte, too.

Don't recall where, but I saw a suggestion from someone that they should rename the team the Sinners. It fits with New Orleans' party image, and the city's two pro teams would then be the Sinners and the Saints.

Saw that as well, Benson owns both teams after all. It was also mentioned with the Saints during the whole bounty scandal.

I like the name change, but damn, the New Orleans Brass would've been the coolest.

Deadspin: Pelicans are awesome.

Warning: language, video of a pelican eating a pigeon.

Pelicans? Hate it. I agree, Brass would have been outstanding.

I don't mind the name Pelicans. Over time people got used to the names Nuggets, Magic, Wizards, Knicks, Heat, Nets, and Lakers- on the surface I don't think Pelicans is worse than some members of that. As that earlier deadspin article said, Pelicans are a lot more badass than people think. Its not like the name is Unicorns. I would have preferred Brass, and maybe Krewe though.

For those who don't like the Pelicans nickname, I have two words: Baltimore Orioles.

Tell me if you saw a pelican looking at you like that you wouldn't run in the other direction.

Personally, I like the set. I think the red "Pelicans" half-roundel in the primary isn't needed, but I like it overall.

When the Saints were bad, fans called them the "Ain'ts". I bet they're already wondering if these are destined to be the Pelicans or the Pelicant's.

I don't watch the NBA, but I love Greivis. Very glad to see him doing well.

That headline is the least surprising thing I'd expect to hear about Vasquez. Good for him.

Love Greivis. Incredibly happy for him. I thought this part was good:

"Some guys can't even take criticism from coaches," Williams said. "I think a lot of people work on their game but they don't want to listen and get helped. This kid just, he takes hard coaching. I've coached him harder than anybody we've had."

I wonder where he learned that ;)
