The Baltimore Orioles have acquired left-hander Cole Irvin in a trade with the Oakland A's, sources tell ESPN. Infield prospect Darell Hernaiz is headed back to the A's.

Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in the Elias era, an actual prospect has been moved to get an established major leaguer

One more player is involved in this deal: Right-hander Kyle Virbitsky is going from the A's to the Orioles. So, final deal: Orioles get: LHP Cole Irvin and RHP Kyle Virbitsky A's get: IF Darell Hernaiz

Yeah, ok, I like it.

He's a back-end guy akin to Gibson, but lots of control left.  Hernaiz is well down the middle infield list for us.

I don’t not like it, but his peripherals show a clear back end guy. Isn’t upgrading anything. But these guys can have some value.

Lots of starts and innings the last two years.

I like it. Hernaiz likely has no place in the organization and we get a solid 1-2 WAR LHP SP plus a prospect lottery ticket.

Yeah it's ok. I liked Hernaiz but he's got a lot of people ahead of him.

Irvin eats a lot of innings and is just under 100 ERA+. There's value in that pre-arb.

Virbitsky has decent K numbers (~10/9), BB numbers (~2) but lots of hits (~10). 17th rounder in 2021 wasn't on any top 30 lists that I saw. Just a throw in I guess unless they scouted him and see something they want to change.

Raises the floor of the rotation, IMO.  Doesn't do anything to the ceiling, unfortunately, and that's the same with Gibson.  We should've gotten a front-end and mid-rotation guy, instead we got two back-end guys.

But, at least they did land two real guys.

Irvin has an option left, too, at least according to Fangraphs.

It'll be interesting to see if he's got a rotation spot locked up or if he's in a competition with Kremer, Bradish, Wells, Voth, and Hall.

Assuming everyone is healthy come OD, you have to assume that Gibson, Irvin, Kremer, and Bradish are locks for the rotation.

Gibson the only lock, IMO.  Rodriguez, Irvin, Kremer, and Bradish feel to me like they are penciled in, but I could see bad to really bad Springs for any of them pushing them back to Norfolk and Wells, Hall, or Voth having a shot at at moving up.

Someone is gonna be hurt, too, maybe more than one, so it just may be the 5 healthy arms.

Pretty much my take too. Will be interesting to see if he's yet another of these guys that comes over and has a bump in improvement for whatever BAL is doing lately. Would be really interesting if he bumped up and became like a low 3 ERA 200k guy. (Not saying it's realistic, but there's not a ton of room he could improve on a 128k/36bb ratio, if he could miss bats a little more often, giving up near 200 hits isn't great, and 25 HR sucks, especially in OAK. But maybe that new LF wall helps him out against RHB and he can shave some of those? 40th in the league in GB%, not exactly Framber, but still ahead of Rodon.

I dunno. Don't hate the deal, kind of the ideal back of the rotation kind of guy.

I like it.  A left handed pitcher who can take advantage of Mount Baltimore in leftfield.

This guy is better than adding no one, but it's just a continuance or perhaps the conclusion of an offseason where they landed no logical targets other than a backup catcher.

Yeah, while (checks notes) RingCentral Coliseum(?) is pitcher friendly, I have to assume any lefty will do a little better with our favorite wall.

Agree.  Still a nightmare of an offseason, this doesn't move the needle in that regard at all.

Only way I could see Irvin, Kremer, or Bradish not making the rotation would be injury. I think they'll slow play Rodriguez to start the year.

5th starter will he from whoever looks best out out of Wells, Voth, Watkins, etc. I think they'd rather Hall throw more consistently in AAA.

A proven SP who can take the ball every 5th day is always a valuable commodity.

I feel better going with Irvin that rolling the dice and hoping we can get repeat performances from Voth or Watkins types.

GRod starts on the roster in case of ROY to get draft picks. Maybe unless he just has a really awful spring.
