I think acquiring a left hander should be a priority.  We have moved the left field wall back to Catonsville, so we should do all we can to take advantage of it.  Let it kill the other teams right handed power.

I get the notion that all that matters is having good pitchers and which hand they throw quality strikes matters less if you're throwing quality strikes, but there's clearly split advantages for player matchups and any team that gets to settle into one quality lineup against you could certainly have an advantage.

For all the discussion on other starters, I'd just rather buy low on Means and keep him here, in the rotation.  I'm not as optimistic as some, but I'd guess sometime after the ASB he should be available to build back up in a starting role.  It's going to limit his inning some, but if we jumped to 2024, he'd be a LHer in my rotation.  For the purposes of this, I'd want a one-year bridge back to Means later in the year.  Manaea seems like a good candidate to leverage to leverage the canyon in left-field and the Orioles defense to platform in Baltimore in 2023 with a bigger contract projection for 2024.  Maybe someone goes ahead and gambles on a multi-year deal with him and maybe that interests him.  Doesn't have to be Manaea, there's other modest LHed options out there to serve as a bridge back to Means, but if I was answering the question, I'd want that LHer in the rotation to break up the righties some.

I think Hall winds up in the rotation.   He's been one of the top LHed pitching prospects in the minors. We go through all of this rebuilding crap talking about how "young players are more exciting than old players" and you finally get to the point to see some young players and there's no room for anyone and we have to sign/trade for 3 starters....

...that said, Hall isn't going to be unlimited in his inning this season.  If you want him to pitch the whole season in Baltimore, you HAVE to limit his innings early.  It's not magic, it's just math.  Do you really want Hyde pulling him out after 3 scoreless innings?...but that's what you're going to have to do.  They ran into this with GRod in the minors and they kept letting him go because of quality and they got to the point where they were going to need to shut him down for the last 4-6 weeks (thank goodness for that injury, right?).  You have to manage his projection and the easiest way to do that is to tandem him out of the bullpen.  The guy that fits the best to do that with is Voth.  Let Voth pitch 5 innings. Hall, you have 3, Colorado finishes it off.  You are basically doing that through the ASB then switch Hall into the rotation (about when Means comes back...hey that 2 now!!) and Hall get 3-5 innings and Voth follows him.  Again, in 2024, I'd expect Hall to break with Means as left-handers in the starting rotation.

If you bounce forward to the start of 2024 nad your rotation is

Woodruff (extension 3+)

Means (extension 3+)

GRod (5 years)

Hall (5 Years)

Bradish (4 years)

Throw a good bullpen, quality defense nad dynamic offense around that and you can win some games.  Go play your ass off.  You can largely have that in 2023, you just have to manage it a little bit to get there.

If you think Hall is good enough to be in a competition for this year's rotation or even to be handed a spot, that's fine.  To use any aspect of the past few years to justify that decision makes zero sense.  Its very flawed logic.  Just make a decision on him based on his abilities and the team's goals.  What we did the past few years to get here isn't any part of it.

I don't think we've seen enough from Hall in the minors to give him an inside shot to a rotation spot on a team that intends to contend.  He's got options.  Use them and send him to Norfolk.  Or let him break in from the bullpen and build confidence that way, then work to stretch him out midway through the year if you want him in the rotation.

For me, I'll go with two external SP added.  The best one I can get for the first guy and then I'd think about value for the second guy.  Then you've get to fill the rest of the rotation throughout the season with Kremer, Bradish, Rodriguez, Hall, Voth, and Means.  I think 100 starts from that group is a good ask.  Asking them to make 130 is too much risk for me.  My rotation will be better off than anyone else's who only brings in 1 or 0 guys.  Probably my bullpen, too.

I like this idea a lot.  But only if Manaea is one of two additions for 2023 and not the only new SP.
