After two straight wins to open the season against Buffalo and Charlotte, Maryland returns home to finish their non-conference slate with a primetime matchup against SMU. The Mustangs are currently 2-0, with blowout victories over North Texas and Lamar. Rhett Lashlee is in his first year as their head coach after spending the previous two seasons as Miami (FL)'s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He takes over for Sonny Dykes, who left to become the head coach at TCU.
SMU is led by their passing offense, which is quarterbacked by former Oklahoma signal-caller Tanner Mordecai. He finished last season with over 3,600 passing yards and 39 touchdowns, and has already thrown for nearly 650 yards and 7 scores in 2022. Their defense wasn't much to write home about last year, so this may very well turn into a primetime shootout on Saturday night.
