Pretty crazy to spend 3 million dollars on a study.

So basically they dusted off Willard Hackerman's old proposal, but tossed aside the arena part.

Especially considering Hackerman probably commissioned his own study before he pitched his proposal on the convention center....they could just have that one updated for a fraction of the cost. Hell, give it to me and I'll come to Baltimore myself to update it this summer in exchange for $50,000, a place to crash near downtown, O's tickets, and crabs/beer one night per week.

Has the topic of a new arena or something along the lines of the Hackerman plan been brought up to the mayoral candidates?  Curious to see where they stand on the topic.

The SunMayoral candidates differ on plans for convention center, new arena

TL; DR (or, too paywalled; didn't read):

Warnock: $100M renovation

Embry and Mosby: New arena w/ convention center expansion

Stokes: Large general sports complex, possibly including horse track

Pugh: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Fine with that. Of all the arena plans, the one that was part of the convention center/hotel expansion was the best IMO, so not moving forward on it without the arena is probably a good thing as far as keeping that possibility alive.

Business interests have asked that the bigger, more “game-changing” plan remain under consideration in the study, in addition to the more limited overhaul of the convention center initially proposed by the stadium authority, said board chair Thomas Kelso. - See more at: http://digitaleditio...h.6etpQYZp.dpuf

More talk, but it's better than nothing I guess.

Is it 2010?

Feels like we've been there, done that with this.

Pretty much. The city doesn't want to pay for it, and the only private source who showed any serious interest is dead. Until another one comes forward, or the numbers make sense for the city, nothing is going to happen.

It's still newsworthy, though, to have something official out there.

I'm trying to remember - why did the city think it was a good idea to delay when a 90 year old guy was offering to pay?

I believe they had to pay part of it, and weren't necessarily willing to do so.

Because the city is governed by a bunch of cheap morons.
