We were here first, so we get the naming rights.
I mean, he's absolutely right. It's something that has been happening essentially since the B&O built their line to DC in the 1830s. There's a reason Baltimore-Washington is already considered one market by many people. The question is whether Washington becomes like London, as mentioned, and simply absorbs everything in its orbit (or, in an American example, if the cities consolidate like New York and Brooklyn), or it remains almost a binary star arrangement where the cities remain distinct but pull each other together.

It's been the 4th largest area for several years now...
It'll stay binary star...
DC was always smaller until about the time of Reagan... that's when the fed gov't grew like a weed and the DC area grew with it...
As for who gets naming rights... its s'pose to be the sub-area with the biggest population.. but they're not following that rule in the Bay Area or else they'd refer to it as the San Jose Bay Area, not the San Francisco Bay Area...

That's because San Francisco is an amazing city, a bastion of culture.
San Jose has, uh, computer companies?
There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

Yeah, but most of San Francisco's culture is being priced out and into Oakland

So you all won't have votes in Congress either?

I think there should be one massive land-swap deal where DC unites with MoCo, PG and the NoVA counties, and in return Maryland annexes Delaware. Everybody wins, and you keep 50 states.

And then Puerto Rico messes that up in a just world. Couldn't care less about keeping 50 states.

When we finally annex Cuba, we can split Florida and give the north half to Georgia and the south half as a Caribbean state.

Don't get the obsession with the 50 state symmetry. I always thought they should just draw a border around the area in present DC that encompasses The Mall (and Smithsonian/monuments), White House, Capitol, and all the federal buildings surrounding them and call that the Capital District. It would be self-governed by Congress, all needs federally funded, but with no homes inside its border and thus no permanent residents (the president and family live there of course, but technically remain residents of their home state). The rest of DC would then become its own state...call it Columbia (or let the residents vote, whichever). Anyway, like mweb says, Puerto Rico should have the option of statehood too....same goes for USVI, Guam and American Samoa. That'd make 55 states.

Actually, if they were going to do that they should simply turn DC over to Maryland ("DC" itself is a relic anyway) and treat the federal buildings like federal property anywhere else in the country.

Eh, I kind of like my idea of separate statehood. It's time for some new blood. The major sports leagues would love it too....new licensed gear to sell for the Columbia Nationals, Columbia Natinals, Columbia Wizards, etc.
No Dan Snyder, your team's name would still be a slur.

Where's the obsession over 50 states? My flag only has 49 stars on it.
