Gary Rajsich says Ron Hopkins was let go, citing philosophical differences: "My decision. ... He is a good baseball man and a good scout."

Hopkins was brought in from Texas, a team that has been great at developing players and bringing in very good talent...Wonder what the differences are and if this is a bad thing for the organization?

Interesting. From our last Q&A with Joe Jordan (May, 2011)

Baltimore Sports and Life: “In January it was announced that you and the O’s had added former Texas Rangers Scouting Director Ron Hopkins as a Cross Checker, and 5 other Scouts to your staff. Has that investment in the Department, provided you with the more complete coverage you sought? Specifically, what changes have their additions brought?”

Joe Jordan: “Ron has been a very good addition – the fact we have a seasoned, experienced scout running the country with Matt Ruebel and myself has been a good thing. We did not add 5 scouts to our overall number but instead replaced 4 scouts no longer on our staff. Our total number of area scouts increased by one.”

Considering that the draft just ended and this guy was the national crosschecker, I imagine there were some major disagreements between Hopkins and Rajsich for a parting of the ways to happen. Hopkins didn't resign so maybe he voiced his differences a little too strongly.

I can only assume that Hopkins wanted to go more aggressive (say Rahier/Romero/Buttrey) in rounds 2-4, and look to save with cheap senior signs rounds 6-10.

Given that Rahier signed for slot value, it's a bit frustrating that we passed him up. I like Kline and Marin just fine, but as Stotle suggested, Rahier and Romero would've been awfully nice on the left side of the infield.

What are the odds on Rahier sticking at SS though? From what I've read and seen, not too good.

I was thinking that Rahier would end up at 3rd with Romero having a chance to stick at SS.

Didn't even know Romero was considered a SS. Might be thinking of the wrong guy and can't double check right now but my memory tells me that Romero is A) really slow afoot B) is considered a 3B only

You're right, BA has Romero as a 3B. I was going off of memory from Perfect Game, who has Romero as a MIF.

Rahier as short to start, shifting to 2b. Romero at 3b to start. Both have bats that could potentially play in the outfield if needed. Both could try their hand at catching if their org didn't mine potentially delaying their progress a year.

Of course, if you don't like pairing those two, substitute Edwin Diaz for Romero.

Just out of curiousity, what leads you to believe this?

Also, do you feel losing Hopkins is bad for the organization?

I was just playing around because, at the time of the draft, I wrote that I would have liked to have seen more aggressiveness early and RZ and I discussed the merits of both approaches.

I think it can be good or bad. Depends on the people involved. Sometimes having someone with a different evaluative mind can help you flesh out a prospect a little better than you otherwise might. The same, you have to trust the judgments of your cross-checkers when you send them out for looks.

Even if he is, you have to think, if your top guys don't get along, that discord isn't going to help things.

Right. I'd assume that both guys are respected in the business, but there must have been a real clash over some of the picks and Rajsich must not be comfortable moving ahead with Hopkins as one of his top guys. It's anybody's guess if it's more about talent/philosophical differences or more about communicating those differences.

If he was fired rather resigning, that means at least one of them (and maybe both of them) were really, really PO'd...

Finally... we can add Keith Law to our scouting department and solve many problems. :D
