No top end talent, to fill the core for a good team going forward.  The next couple of years could be similar to this one.

I have been saying for years, Dan is going to leave it far worse then he found it.   I do not see, the next Oriole star in this group.

Well, I'm not sure too many thought of Davis, Britton or even Manny as top end talent early on. That said this has been a pretty devastating year development wise.

Manny was extremely highly rated.  #3 pick in 2010 draft.  Top-20 overall prospect heading into 2011 by both BA and BP.  Climbed to top-10 heading into 2012, then made his debut that August in his age 19 season and took off basically right away.

Davis and Britton had top-75 prospect pedigrees at a time (higher for Britton), but both struggled immensely in early MLB chances and were basically dumped.  Certainly fair to say nobody thought they'd be star level players at the time they got to Baltimore after failing in Texas in Davis' case or moved to the bullpen after failing as a starter in Britton's case.

I'd say we have a couple guys who compare to what Davis and Britton were rated when they were in the minors (Sisco, Hays, Diaz, Mountcastle, Hall).  So even if they come up and fail initially, it's still possible they end up being major contributors or even stars.  We don't have any stud prospects like Manny was, or Adam Jones and Matt Wieters before him.  Stud prospects don't always make it though, as Brian Matusz can attest to.

I doubt anybody really thought Manny would be nearly as good as he turned out to be. Part of that was just adapting so well to third base and being and being an elite defender there, which again, I dont think anybody really saw happening. He may have been a high draft pick and came up early but I also don't recall anyone making those projections offensive or defensively when he was in Norfolk. The though was he'd be a pretty good player.

Davis, was in the Ranger organization at the time so not sure.

Britton was well thought of as a starter, but not sure he was considered top end.

I remember the day Manny was drafted, some on the panel on MLB network, thought Manny was better than Harper.

Pretty sure Britton was mid-season Top 10 with BA.

I think he was projected as an All-Star caliber player....  but wasn't looked at as a HOF talent.   That changed as you said when his defense at 3rd proved to be elite, and the gap power he showed as a young player developed into huge power as he aged.

I think whatever talent we have is in A ball and that's three years away. Obviously drafting Witt and adding premium choices in 2020 and 2021 will be major upgrades.

Tate at #9, and the flowery report about him, seems way too optimistic to me.

I respect and will take the judgement of anyone with scouting experience over my own, but just looking at his statline it's hard to get excited about him.  He must look really good in the uniform or something, because nothing he's done indicates that he "looks like a long-term big leaguer."  I think he stinks and that it was foolish to target him as the main piece coming back for Britton (if he was the best we could do, I understand that, but I don't think that's likely).  Call it confirmation bias on my part (and it absolutely is), but he was terrible at Bowie after the trade and is already 24.

I guess the hope is he can become a dominant two-pitch reliever once they pull the plug on him as a SP.  And if he can, that's a nice guy to have.  I have very little hope that he even reaches the majors as a starter, and most great relief pitchers are ones who failed as MLB starters, not ones who failed as minor league starters.  Failed minor league starters usually max out as middle relief guys.

I wouldn’t give up on him yet as a starter. He’s very athletic with upside. The thing is, there been no real progression with his pitch arsenal and I see his two main offerings now as average at best. His FB can flash plus at times with arm side run and his slider (cutter) has decent depth and break. Command with both needs improvement and his CH is purely developmental at this stage.

I'm not saying to give up on him in terms of stop letting him pitch.  I just don't think he's going to be any good given his advanced age and relative lack of success (raw performance and peripherals).  Would be very happy to have him prove me wrong.

Yeah, that's my recollection as well. Certainly when you have a guy that young lots of thing can happen though.
