So it looks like for my trip this summer I am leaving Sunday night, arriving in Paris on Monday afternoon and staying until Friday morning.

What should I see, do and eat?

I am already planning on doing the major stuff:  Eiffel Tower, Champs-Elysses, Notre Dame, Versailles, Louve.  What else would you recommend?  Keep in mind I'm not a hipster.

Where are some good Cafes/breakfast spots to sit on the street and people watch?  I really want to do that.

As an aside, I'm checking flights -- looks like IcelandAir from Dulles, stopover in Iceland and then into Paris is my best bet for about $300, Wow is slightly cheaper but they charge for carry ons.

I don't get how those airlines can be so cheap (and apparently nice and reliable) versus, say, United which wants literally $2,000 more for the same flight/route.

Am I missing something?

Keep checking for direct flights. The transfer in Iceland isn't bad but it still adds about 3 hours to what should be a 6.5-7 hour flight. IcelandAir is solid, though. Good airline. HOT stewardesses.

I think demand is way down after terrorism and some other factors. I paid around $600 to fly to London last year on British Air. A few years earlier I spent $1500. All about demand. Plus there are a bunch of low-cost airlines like Wow that are driving down the prices to Europe. Even higher end carriers are lowering prices.

I try to avoid US airlines when flying abroad. The service and amenities are always better on foreign carriers. Unedited movies too.

Anyway, know where you're staying in Paris yet? Picking a neighborhood to stay in is key and depends on how much you'll pay.

Honestly, you've already got a lot to see/do in the time you'll be there. For instance, doing the Louvre and the Notre Dame will take up an entire day. Book tickets for sites in advance whenever you can. Check out the Paris card and see if it makes sense for you. Musee d'Orsay was good too, I actually liked it more than Louvre.

I highly recommend the restaurant Les Papilles. We went, delicious. Recommended it to family and friends and they all loved it too. It's incredibly hard to find a bad meal in Paris. The food is just good. Drink wine, beer is expensive. I didn't have time to go but the Catacombs seem cool. Luxembourg Park is a nice place to relax on a nice day. Bring wine and cheese. Pont Neuf is a nice spot on the river to chill.  I'll try to dig up some more recommendations from my '12 trip.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

We haven’t finalized a place. We have a few air bnbs we are deciding on. They’re all within walking distance, I think to the centralized touristy areas. I’ll post on here once our location is firmed up.

yeah the metro is great but it's nice to be within walking distance of a few cafes, restaurants, sites, etc so you're not always on it.

Do you recall any good places that offer patio seating along a street, where you can just chill and have breakfast and drink coffee?

I really want to do that at least one morning while I'm there.

We went to Cafe de Flore. Saw Kate Moss there.

Cafe St. Regis on Ile St-Louis.

Both would be good choices before Notre Dame.

Thought that was the John Travolta movie. So I looked it up. At work.

Shit.

Don't waste your time going up in the Eiffel Tower. The best views of Paris are the ones with the tower in it.

Yeah, I think there's some kind of office building in Montparnasse that supposedly has a great view...  because you can see the Eiffel Tower from it.

Also don't miss the Montmartre neighborhood. If you've seen Amelie, it was filmed there. Cool church and views from up there -- there was an awesome food festival there when we went, so they may do something similar throughout the year. It's also where the Moulin Rouge is located, although it's a tourist trap. Still worth breezing through.

Normandy isn’t doable during your stay. Everything else sounds good. You’ll be busy.

Well, I booked everything and on Saturday WOW air emails me and says they  had to cancel my flight out to Paris!

I've emailed, tweeted, called, etc etc and haven't heard back.

The kicker is, the original flight that I booked is still on sale on their website!  It's the same flight # it now just leaves 10 minutes later than when I originally booked.  I looked at the seating chart and the seats that I originally selected are still listed as unavailable.  I have zero idea what's going on but I'm already annoyed by this trip.

I live 15 mins from BWI.  I may just drive up there this week and speak to an agent if nobody answers.

Crazy that no one is answering too. I wonder if it’s some kind of system crash. Either way, not a very reassuring feeling.

Well someone responded to me on twitter in broken english offering to "change" my flight to the one scheduled for 10 minutes later with the same flight number.

What a cluster F.

I am going to drive to BWI today and speak to an agent there because I can't get anyone on the phone.

Really annoying.

That sucks. Good luck dude. I can't believe no one is answering the 888 number.

it's just the same hold music -- I waited a grand total of an hour yesterday and another 10 minutes this morning before bagging that idea.
