Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk revealed on the radio today that Maryland will be playing in the Veterans Classic next year (2018).

Annual 4-team/2-game set held at the Naval Academy, either on or very close to Veteran's Day. No word on other teams that will be there or who MD would play, but obviously Navy is one possibility.

Is it the HC or the AD responsibility to make the schedule?

They get some decent programs for this, aside from Navy. In 2015 they had UNC (preseason #1), Temple and Florida. 2016 it was Marquette, Ohio St and Vanderbilt. This year it's Alabama, Memphis and Pitt.

If MD does end up playing Navy, it will be only the second time that I can recall them playing in hoops in my lifetime. The only other matchup was pretty noteworthy, in the 2nd Round of March Madness in 1985. It was the Bias-Branch era at MD, and David Robinson was a sophomore at Navy who few people had heard of before that game. Navy got a huge upset over someone in the 1st Round to get to MD. It was a tight game, with MD pulling it out late. But most of the talk afterward was about Robinson, as it was his big coming out party since Navy hadn't been to a Tourney in decades and was seldom on TV. Everyone spent the summer wondering if he'd leave Navy for a big time school, since you can transfer after 2 years without the military commitment. Obviously he stayed.

Typically the coaching staff.

Head coach.  Turgeon builds a cupcake schedule intentionally.  I hate it.

It's pathetic.   He builds the schedule like he coaches...  conservative is one adjective, scared is another.

I wouldn't automatically assume MD is playing Navy. I'm sure they are expecting a large MD crowd no matter what, thanks to proximity. But to really drive ticket sales it might make more sense for the Terps to play one of the other two teams....and if history is any indication they will be schools from a major conference.

It will be interesting to see how this affects the non-con schedule.  It maybe make it tougher for mid majors to get a big payday from the B10 schools.

Why not go to 22 games and have home and homes. God do I long for the days of home and homes. That still leaves you 8-10 games to fill in with an early season tournament, 2-3 other strong OOC opponents, and a cupcake or two.

Nevermind. Thought there were 12 B10 teams. There are 14. Hard to believe there will ever be a 26 game league schedule. Still would prefer it though. Cut out all the cupcakes.

InsideMDSports: Report: Early Season Big Ten Games Returning Next Year

The Big Ten will once again play two early season league games next year, CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported Friday.

According to Rothstein, next year’s games will begin Friday, November 30 and conclude by Tuesday, December 4. The matchups have yet to be determined. An official announcement is expected soon.

With the two extra conference games they obviously can't play them all after the new year. I'd still prefer a little later than that. But you do want to get them in before all 14 schools start exams and break for the holiday, so maybe that was the latest they could do it.

Testudo Times: Maryland Basketball won't participate in 2018-19 Gavitt Games, per report

Well that's just great. Even more of a chicken-shit OOC schedule than usual.

"What? We don't have to play the Gavitt Games this season? Woohoo! Get me Delaware State on the phone!"

Right.

My point is we all know Mark Turgeon will fill in that open game slot with a respected non-con opponent with a healthy KenPom ranking, so that the Terps' will be sporting a solid SoS on the resume come tournament selection time.

[/sarcasm]

Overall, of course. The non conference schedule should be harder. In this case they expected to play in this thing. Cant fault them for not finding a decent replacement for this game.

Hey! I wasn't too far off!

IMS: Maryland Basketball's Season Opener Announced

Maryland basketball will open its 2018-19 season at home against Delaware on November 6th, Jon Rothstein of the FRS Sports Network reported Tuesday.

Previously announced games include Navy (Veterans Classic), Mount St. Mary's, Marshall and Hostra. This could be one epic OOC schedule. Turge is really outdoing himself. I bet he gets a helping hand from the ACC/Big Ten Challenge schedulers too....I'm thinking the Terps get Pitt, their one-time "rival", who are coming off an 0-18 season in-conference.

Was really hoping we'd get a Xavier-Maryland rematch at Xfinity Center sometime soon.

It's still a joke Michigan State has skated by without having to play in this.

I know they have the Champions Classic thing with UK KU and Duke, but still, it's a bit annoying.
