The Orioles made a small move last week by signing a big-name independent league player, adding Patrick Palmeiro, son of former slugger Rafael Palmeiro, to a minor league contract.

Patrick Palmeiro, 26, played in 2015 for the Sugar Land (Texas) Skeeters of the Atlantic League after three seasons in the Chicago White Sox system. His father briefly joined him last September for a stint with the Skeeters, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk in his only game with the team.

His son, a third baseman, hit .256 with 13 home runs and 68 RBIs in 128 games.

Here is another kid I will be rooting for in Preston.  His dads story in baseball is a great tragedy.  Great by stats and counting measures but mocked and belittled at the end and most likely will be kept out of the hall.  I will be hoping Preston can change the Palmeiro Legacy in baseball.

<p>I am pretty sure Shack is thinking of PBR.

Rough first year.  He did have some bright spots though.

Palmeiro hit in the middle of Frederick’s lineup all year, quietly putting together a solid .251/.309/.401 line with 17 homers. He’s learning 2B to add versatility and handled same-side pitching much better than earlier in his career. The ceiling is a bench bat and offensive-minded reserve infielder, though Palmeiro could wind up a 4A type if no one tool impacts the game enough for a full-time. We like his sweet left-handed stroke and burgeoning plate discipline.
