Good interview. And I am planning on providing some more depth to his points on the MLS and MNT in upcoming articles. I think his assessment of the MLS is spot on. It has improved a bunch from when it started. But as he stated, the level of play is not near that of the EPL.  There isn't much doubt that the best MLS teams would not fair well in the EPL. They would be at the bottom and very likely relegated.  I think the general level of play is on par with the mid teams in the Championship division.  And that is decent soccer.

IMO there are two huge reasons why the MLS will not, nor should anyone realistically think they will, rise to the level of a top world class league in the next half dozen years.

Nope not going to tell you what the reasons are......going to have to read my next article! :-P

76 dead, although five on the flight reportedly survived, including the two goalkeepers.

They are a traditionally lower-division club that had been promoted to Brazil's first division a couple seasons ago and was slowly improving. They were on their way to play in the Copa Sudamericana final against a club from Medellin. The charter plane reportedly carried both the Brazilian and Argentine national teams in the recent past.

Soccer has had more than its share of these awful events. Prayers to all the families involved. They have been somewhat of a cinderella story in Brazil.....so sad.

Colombian authorities are giving the official numbers as 77 on board, with 71 dead.

The Colombian club Chapaconese was on their way to play asked that the Copa Sudamericana be awarded to them, and the other clubs in Brazil's Serie A are asking that the club be made relegation-proof for at least three years and are offering the club fee-free transfers.

On the 29th of May, 1985, Liverpool FC and Juventus FC met at Heysel Stadium in Brussels to contest the European Cup Final. Both clubs had objected to UEFA's choice of the dilapidated grounds as the venue for the match, but UEFA would not budge on the matter; the clubs also objected to one of the three sections of the stands behind the left goal being designated as neutral seating for Belgian fans (Juventus supporters had all three sections behind the opposite goal), as this could potentially create a dangerous mix of fans both inside that section, and between that section and the Liverpool sections. This arrangement ultimately caused this third section to be occupied mostly by Juventus supporters (both local Italian expatriates, and other supporters who travelled to the match), indeed putting Juventus supporters and Liverpool supporters in very close proximity, with inadequate resources to keep them separate - a recipe for disaster in an age of widespread hooliganism in football.

Prior to the match, tensions and hooliganistic behavior between the two opposing groups escalated, leading to a charge by Liverpool supporters into the "neutral" area. Fleeing Juventus fans created a crush on the section's perimeter wall, which partially collapsed. In the chaos, 39 people - mostly Italians and Juventus supporters - died, primarily as a result of the crush, not the collapse, and over 600 were injured. Unrest from Juventus supporters from the other side of the stadium continued during the match, which was contested due to fear that a postponement would lead to further violence.

This incident would be known as the Heysel Stadium Disaster, which marked the end of Liverpool's era of European dominance, and set back full participation of English competitive club football in Europe for essentially a full decade (half of which was an outright ban). Photographer Eamonn McCabe, at the time known for his coverage of sporting events (he is a four-time winner of the UK's Sports Photographer of the Year Award), was present at Heysel. Using a point-and-click Nikon SureShot, he began to take pictures of the unfolding events, not yet sure of what he was seeing. These captured images (several of which are in the article linked below) led to him receiving the News Photographer of the Year award. McCabe reflects on the disaster, and its impact on him, for BBC Arts.

Soccer in Baltimore is budding and now the city will have its own NPSL club. They have just announced their first 13 players on their inaugural roster and the majority of them are from the Baltimore area.

In a Copa Libertadores match on Wednesday, supporters of Uruguayan club Nacional taunted Chapecoense, on the latter's home ground, with gestures alluding to the 2016 plane crash that killed 19 players and staff from the Brazilian side.

Just wanted to pass along some of the impacts in Europe as the virus expands, especially in Italy.

1. Serie A (Italian first division) announced today that for the next month every match will be held in fanless stadiums. Not sure of the revenue split they have there between TV and fan attendance but this will for sure impact the pocket book. TV interest will certainly go up though.

2. Euro 2020 is this summer....maybe. What seemed like a great idea upfront may turn out to be a bad decision. UEFA, in order to spread fan interest, had decided to stage the tournament at venues all across Europe rather than the traditional single host country. For this years event their are 12 host cities all over from London to St. Petersburg.  Unfortunately this increases the chance that the tournament is cancelled by probably an order of magnitude.  More stadiums/cities to deal with and much more air travel.

3. Switzerland has banned all gatherings of more than 1000 people.

4. Next weeks second legs of Champions League are still open to fans.....for now.

La Liga will play in empty stadiums, and Ligue 1 in front of 1,000-or-fewer crowds.
