RHP

John Logan Community College

Selected: 3rd Pick (69th Overall)

MLB Pipeline 102nd overall:

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

The best junior college prospect in the 2016 Draft, Dietz likely will fall just short of becoming the highest selection in John A. Logan (Ill.) CC history, a distinction that belongs to White Sox 1994 second-rounder John Ambrose. After the Giants took Dietz in the 29th round last year, he spent the summer adding strength, which has led to more dominant stuff this year. He went 12-1, 1.22 in 13 starts with 117 strikeouts in 103 innings, ranking third in wins, fifth in ERA and seventh in whiffs among national junior college pitchers entering the Juco World Series.

After topping out at 93-94 mph in 2015, Dietz now consistently works at 91-94 mph with his fastball and has hit 98 in short stints. His slider has gotten harder and sharper as well, showing flashes of becoming a solid pitch. He also has made strides with his changeup, enhancing his chances of remaining a starter.

With his 6-foot-6 frame and three-quarters delivery, Dietz creates good angle with his pitches. The Texas Christian recruit has no problem filling the strike zone, though he'll need to improve the command of his fastball and the consistency of his secondary pitches to make it as a big league starter. If he can't, he has promise as a late-inning reliever.

Pirates Breakdown:
http://piratesbreakd...profile-part-4/

One of the top junior college pitchers in the country this spring, Dietz sports a fastball that sits 91-94 and can reach the upper-90s. He has a slider that has shown flashes of becoming a plus-pitch, as well.  He has also continued to develop a changeup, the tried and true defining pitch of any and every starting pitcher to go through the Pirates’ minor league system. Some scouts question whether Dietz will be able to remain a starter at the major league level, unless his command improves over the next couple years. If he can solve that issue, he could be an effective innings-eater at the back of a major league rotation with a consistently high strikeout rate, or Dietz could be an effective reliever with a three-pitch repertoire.

BSL: Baltimore Orioles: Organization Review

http://baltimorespor...ization-review/

BSL: The O’s next two selections were also college arms in Keegan Akin, and Matthias Dietz (JUCO). Out of Akin and Dietz, which arm are you more excited about as you project forward?

Callis: I like both Akin and Dietz, so it’s tough to pick between the two. If I’m forced to, I’ll go with Dietz because he has a better body and I think his slider will be better in the long run, but Akin is a lefty who can reach 96 mph and really pitch too.

Faleris:  With regards to Akin/Dietz, I really liked Dietz as a high-upside JUCO target and Akin is a non-traditional starter build with the stuff to stick in a rotation. Dietz has the higher upside for me and more potential to really take off if things come together for him. Big lefty who works off tough angles and can have two legit swing-and-miss offerings in his fastball and breaking ball. Akin is more polished and I imagine will put up better comparative numbers early on, but will be challenged by more advanced hitters who can take advantage of his lack of plane. For me, Dietz is a potential number 3 with a solid pen future as a back-up, while Akin is more of a back-end guy with a potential to move quickly through the system.

Spedden: Out of Dietz and Akin, Akin intrigues me a bit more to this point. He was a little more polished coming out of the draft, which I think showed in both pitcher’s performances in Aberdeen. There’s definitely upside with Dietz, but the Orioles should–and probably will–take a little more time with him.

Lack of homers is nice...ok walk rate.

But too many hits and not enough Ks for a guy with a power arm.
