Been a nice start to 2012 for Andino.

Through his first 76 ab's, Andino is batting .316, has a .779 OPS, and a .336 wOBA. He has 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 hr, 6 rbi, 5 bb's (2 last night), and 18 k's.

Not that it means a lot in 191 innings, but FanGraphs has his current UZR/150 as 1.0. That matches what I'm seeing with my eyes, I think he is playing a good 2nd base.

If his BABIP is elevated, his walk rate is lower, and k rate is higher than it figures to be.

Really solid approach at the plate, with lots of line drives right back up the middle. (LD % is 24.1, was 21.3 last year.)

This piece from Baseball Analytics (http://www.baseballa...ng-sliders.html) shows that Andino is facing the 7th highest % of sliders in baseball so far this year.

It will be interesting to see how long Buck leaves him in the 9 hole if Reimold is out for an extended period of time.

Feeling better about my thought preseason that we shouldn't just pigeon this guy in as a UTI player who's being forced to play a reg role. He's definitely an above average 2B defensively. The question of course is and will always be the bat. IMO, he's made some changes at the plate that will allow him to be an average or close to average offensive 2b. With average offense and above average defense we have an everyday 2b on our hands.

The thing is if BRob was ready to come back tomorrow you really wouldn't be able to move Andino off of 2b for him at this point. That speaks volumes. BTW... I also think it is a good thing for Brian. I truely believe the guy is a gamer. He loves the game of baseball and he is showing it with his effort to get back at some point this year and by traveling with the team. With the team playing well overall I could see a scenario where Brian pushed himself too much to get back in the lineup and contribute. With Andino playing a good 2b I think that takes any of that potential pressure off of Brian.

Wondering what kind of reception he gets in Boston? My guess is he'll get booed, but it won't be too strong. I don't think they hate us(or him) like the Yankees.

My thoughts are if B-Rob does make it back, and that's still a big if at this point IMO, would you displace Andino to do so? I appreciate all B-Rob has done both on-and-off the field here, but I think Andino is the better option at this point. One possible idea is sending Andino to third or even DHing B-Rob atleast to start with.

Roberts as DH isn't a bad option if he is able to come back and hit close to how he did before. It's not like we're getting a lot of production from Reynolds or Johnson right now, and that would keep Brian out of the field.

I still don't expect him to ever suit up again, but if he does and is still a valuable leadoff guy, stashing him at DH might not be a bad plan.

DH Roberts
LF Reimold
RF Markakis
CF Jones
C Wieters
1B Davis
SS Hardy
3B Betemit
2B Andino

Andino was 0 for 4, with 3 k's. He is now 4 for his last 30. Over his past 12 games, he has had 3 bb's and 15 k's. He could use a day off tomorrow.

SO lets say Andino is a .680 OPS reg 2b with very good defense and BRob is .730 reg OPS with below average defense. Who you taking as your reg 2B. Overall speed is probably the same and BRob will give you more SBs. However, I do think BRobs stolen base attempts will drop a good bit.

Better question is are you ok with Andino as the regular third baseman?

Does he play 3b defense as well as he does at 2b??? IMO, you pretty much know what you are getting offensively with Andino. If moving him to 3b would hurt both our 2b and 3b defense I'm not sure that I do. If he's very good defensively at 3B I would seriously consider it. The truth of the matter is that we need to get better offensive production from 3b but considering our internal options I'm fine with Andino there if he is solid defensively. Truth be told I think you guys nailed it about Roberts and his inability to play 5-6 days a week. Seems likely we are headed for more mixing and matching with Brian and Andino at 2b, Andino and Betemit, and possibly Tejada at 3b, and Davis, Betemit, and Reynolds at 1b and DH.

Been a rough stretch for Andino.

Season: .625 OPS, 12 xbh's, 17 rbi's, 15 bb's, 63 k's

.593 OPS in May
.454 OPS in June

Definitely time for the bench for Andino with Roberts coming back. He'll probably get about 1/2 the starts at 3B. Hopefully getting more rest will re-invigorate him and he can climb back up to around a 700 OPS. I don't know if he really has much upside beyond that, but 700 OPS w/ solid defense will be a welcome improvement over our current 3B production.

Being exposed for the player he is.

He isn't that good and is certainly not an everyday player.

That has always been the case despite the excitement that people had. Put him on the bench and he can be valuable as a role player or perhaps as a secondary piece in a trade.

Yet you keep hearing the phrase Andino-ize for other role players given the Orioles injuries in the corner outfield and ineffectiveness in the corner infield. I'll give him credit though, he did better than I thought he would overall since B-Rob went down and he became the de facto everyday second baseman.

Thats because people overrate small sample sizes and big hits that stick in your memory. It doesn't mean the player is all of a sudden good despite thousands of pro at bats that say otherwise.
