Agree not much going on in sporting world right now. I get the world supporting their teams in the WC....it's great....like the Olympics.

I will be all over the World Lacrosse games in Denver starting on July 10th. They take place every 4 years just like WC soccer.

There are several local players from MD HS and colleges on team USA. Even if you don't like lacrosse much, the games are super high level and it is team USA! Most of the games are on the ESPN networks.

I didn't even realize LAX was a world wide sport. Who are the biggest competition for the US?

Seriously?  The World Lacrosse games have been going on for over 40 years and been held in Baltimore a few times.

This year there are teams from all over the world like Finland, Israel, Japan, UK, Germany, Australia, etc.

Main competition will come from team Canada and Iroqouis Nation. Team USA beat Canada in 2010 championship game 12-10.

Yeah, had no idea. I dabble with the NCAA Tourney, but that's been the extent of my Lacrosse fandom. I'll tune in a little if I remember.

And that's great and hopefully will lead to more exposure of the sport. However, lacrosse is much more regionalized than soccer. Part of the fun in getting into the soccer World Cup or Olympics into hockey even if you're a casual fan, is the fact that the US isn't global superpower here. In baseball or basketball, if we don't win it all in those respective competitions, it's a disappointment. It also doesn't feel like you have the best players playing in these games. That's why the Dream Team despite the domination was so fun, that you could have all those players on the same court at the same time.

Hope to check out some of the lax. It's cool there having it in Denver, clearly the sport has grown so it's no longer just east of the Mississippi. DU has been in the lax Final Four. CU just started a women's lax team.

Cut him some slack here, I didn't know the extent of lax as a worldwide sport either. I'm not sure how many people even in Maryland which is a lacrosse hotbed know the World Lax games existed. I just looked it up, the US has won all but two of the competitions and that was Canada who won those two. Australia is the only other runner-up. Definitely needs more parity to grow.

Agree w/ you. I totally get the world fervor aspect of soccer. No sport will ever surpass it's world popularity.

Again, I agree the athletes are great and I see why fans get into it.

Lacrosse will always be a minor sport in the grand scheme of things, but for pure action and excitement it rivals any sport IMO.

Suddent death w/ 1st goal wins is just great drama....like playoff hockey.

I don't think basketball will, but that's probably the closest. The disadvantage about basketball is height -- I'm 5'5 after all so my dreams of going to the NBA ended before I picked up a ball (yeah Muggsy Bogues&Earl Boykins). But it's still one that both genders can play and pretty cheap; still safer than football and many other sports. I don't exactly think you are at risk for brain injury like you are in soccer with using your head. It's an easier sport than soccer to play by yourself or with fewer people.

I'd go to golden goal for extra time.

Want to know why no one knows about the World Lacrosse Championship?

1967 - USA

1974 - USA

1978 - Canada

1982 - USA

1986 - USA

1990 - USA

1994 - USA

1998 - USA

2002 - USA

2006 - Canada

2010 - USA

At least in the World Baseball Classic the US has never finished higher than fourth.

I expect the TV ratings to be better this year since ESPN is carrying more games than ever.

Hey, even Uganda has a team this year.

Hate on it all you want...I'll take a lax game over soccer or baseball 7 days a week.

I think the "hate" started because you've been taking shots at baseball and soccer. That's great you so are so passionate about lacrosse. In order for the sport, you need a lot more parity. The US dominating isn't exactly good for the sport as a whole.

Lax is a good, entertaining game.  Really starting to finally grow.  Midwest, FL, Colorado, some California. Would think the Pacific Northwest?

Lax isn't something I typically think about, but I can get into games when on and I pay attention.

Agree the US being dominant isn't great for the sport, but not sure how that changes anytime soon. Seeing new countries and cultures pick up a sport, any sport, is good for the growth of that sport.

Soccer is a world-wide sport and always will be. One big reason is b/c you get 1 ball, a group of people and go play.

It's cheap and easy. Lacrosse, like American football, takes equipment for each player, so it has economic obstacles which will always hinder the growth process.

Nothing wrong with just trying to grow the game nationally IMO. I'm a baseball fan, it's not the global brand that soccer or basketball is. I don't really care about the WBC for example. I'm not sure how much lacrosse has grown as a whole, but clearly from a national perspective it has.

I know from a pure numbers perspective of the HS and colleges adding a sport in the last 25 years, lacrosse has been at the top of the list. I get it's not for everybody, as is the case w/ all sports.

But what I don't get is when somebody says this:

I don't like lacrosse b/c there isn't enough scoring or action. Yet this same person likes baseball and / or soccer...which BOTH have far less scoring than lacrosse.

Heck...I'm just happy I live in a place where I can talk about it w/ other sports fans on this forum and go see a good game when I have the time.

Happy 4th of July everybody!

Good post.

I think there's enough scoring/action in lacrosse, way more than in soccer -- just not exactly my thing. I can appreciate and respect the sport however. That's been the biggest thing for me in this World Cup, I might not love soccer and just be flag-waving, but it takes a lot of stamina to play especially since they don't exactly have breaks. I did cross country in high school and used to run a lot more and I'm impressed, takes a lot more endurance than most sports.

In terms of baseball being boring, I can appreciate both a high and low scoring affair -- I don't really even have much of a preference here. Soccer, I'm just bored with the lack of real scoring opportunities in a lot of cases, but I'll admit besides the World Cup especially when the US isn't playing, I don't give it much of a chance. There's enough to tie me down between baseball, football (both pro/college), college basketball, and to a lesser extent, the NBA/NHL.  My brother (who generally dislikes baseball) always likes to remind me if I grew up in England, I'd be into Manchester U or something -- while I like to march to my own drum, I think how you grow up matters.

Even when we don't see eye-to-eye, I do respect your passion for lacrosse.

Growing up in the Maryland area and going to a preppy high school, the lacrosse culture really turned me against the whole sport.

The "lax bro" culture is just so obnoxious...I love Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic but I really did appreciate moving to Ohio for college where people weren't like that. The fact that they really follow baseball was just a bigger plus.
