Not sure what the prices are. A bunch of buddies want me to bring some up to Long Island this summer and cook them. I've never cooked crabs before -- can I just throw them into a pot of boiling water? Or do I need a special pot?
Also, there's no way I can keep them alive for the drive up there -- any recommendations? Should I just make crab cakes instead?

Get a crap pot that has a rack that can fit in the bottom. Here's a couple of examples

Use a bottle of beer, a splash of vinegar and some water, as long as the liquid level is below the rack you're fine. Forget the old bay and go with JO #2 seasoning. Put on the burner, when they're read they are done. If you still aren't sure they done take out a claw and try it, preferably one from the middle of the pat as those are usually the last to cook. You can steam on the stove, but I prefer using a propane burner and steaming outside.
