What gives you that feeling of nostalgia?

When something makes me feel nostalgic for the past, I often get an almost sick feeling in my stomach, like a knot or a bad case of butterflies.

I'm starting this topic because I just saw that the cast of The Wonder Years had a reunion, which made me remember that feeling I get when I hear that Joe Cocker intro.

Obviously, a lot of music and certain songs. It's so easy to have a song take you back to one particular moment in time.

Movies and tv don't really do that as much, though there is still a nostalgic feel.

Another one is if you used to drive a certain road and visit a certain place as a kid but you rarely are there anymore.

I used to spend a bunch of time at my grandparents house growing up. I rarely travel that road and area anymore. On the occasion that I do, a lot of emotions flood in.

Accents. I'm the son of an English mother and a father from Arkansas. I rarely hear the accents around here, but when I do, I'm far away for a few minutes.

It's amazing how similar they look to when the show went off the air. The mother still looks the same. And where's Dan Lauria?

And it's not weird that you feel that way -- the word "nostalgia" is based on words that translate to "homecoming" and "pain or ache"

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Food:   Yesterday my wife made vegetable soup with stew meat, the kind you simmer all day in the crockpot.   Just the smell of it took me back to when Grandma used to cook big meals for family get-togethers.  If it had been served in Fiestaware bowls from the '70s, I don't know how I would have made it back from that trip.

As I am getting older, and haven't had any kids, I am starting to think a lot about the past. I recently made a list of all the movies I've ever seen in the theater -- almost 500.

My parents just sold the house I grew up in, too, which made me reflect a bit.

Visiting or seeing old places.  It's sad -- I've been out of college for 10 years now and whenever we go back and tailgate for a football game, just setting foot on that campus gets the memories going.

I'm happy with where I am now, but I'd pay a pretty penny to go back in time for a week or so...

I had a project meeting at Towson last night, and while I was walking across campus I realized that the last time I had been on a college campus on a Sunday night was while I was living at Maryland. That brought back some memories.

Back in college, a friend of mine was on an episode of Remote Control.  He finished second, and I think this is exactly what he won.

A few weeks ago I saw a Delorean driving on the beltway. If that's not the most 80's thing ever I dont know what is.

Had a basketball coach's clinic tonight in my old middle school gym.  Pretty sure I haven't been back in that building since I left it 20-some years ago.  Definitely brought back some memories.

Still have one of these. Bought it in Canada, along with a Raptors hat, the year they started.

Rode my bike around my old neighborhood (Catonsville/Paradise) this past weekend, went to some spots I hadn't been to in over 20 years and recalled several incidents, people, random memories...it was both life confirming and depressing at the same time.

Chris -- rode by about 4 houses you used to live in. You got around back in the day, bud.
