Replacing Brent Musburger (Sports Illustrated)

• As first reported by James Andrew Miller, Musburger has been offered the job of lead college football announcer for the upcoming SEC Network, which debuts at the end of August. It is unclear whether Musburger will take that offer, as some sources I spoke with noted he is unhappy with how the process is shaking out. What seems clear is that Musburger is being pulled from the lead announcer spot for ABC's Saturday Night Football, which is ESPN's top game each week. (Musburger, via ESPN PR, turned down an interview request from SI.com. "He isn't doing any interviews on the subject," said an ESPN spokesperson.)

Good. He's awful.

You are looking live at someone who doesn't know what he's talking about :D

You're just upset he leered at McCarron's girlfriend and not Nick Marshall's.

I'm usually pretty picky when it comes to announcers, and I'm also pretty odd when it comes to them as well (don't like Vin Scully. Just don't.) But I liked Musberger. I know his best days were behind him and he made countless mistakes, but I was entertained by his broadcasts and thought he and Herbstreit had great chemistry. Sad to see him go, especially when I read who his possible replacements would be. Meh.

If he's really gone, I'll miss, "You are looking LIVE." I'm a fan of his in general as well. And I agree him/Herbie worked well together. I didn't think he "lost it" or anything. I also think he should've been allowed to work the first CFB Playoff CG.

ESPN’s Brent Musburger and Jesse Palmer Signed as Lead SEC Network Announce Team (ESPN)

A nice way of saying "you've been demoted."

Musburger is one of the most recognized voices in the history of sports television and he will continue to be a staple of ESPN’s sports coverage with a multi-year contract extension. In addition to lending his voice to one of the three football games slated for the network each Saturday, Brent will remain a play-by-play announcer for Big 12 college basketball games across ESPN networks. He and Palmer will call multiple college football bowl games on ESPN as well.

Musburger will make appearances on behalf of SEC Network and, after more than 20 years at ESPN and ABC, his role will continue to include sharing his expertise and experiences as a mentor.

I think they should've atleast let him broadcast the first college football playoff. I don't think he was exactly slipping. That said, I think this might be ESPN trying to keep Chris Fowler and/or Rece Davis from leaving. I'm sure we'll see another announcement soon with some "promotions" news.

I wonder who they're going to name as the ABC studio analyst now?

@richarddeitsch You'll see a lot of spin out of Bristol on Brent today. Understandable. Have to sell this like he wasn't pushed out.

Sports Illustrated: Brent Musburger, Jesse Palmer named SEC Network's lead team

What's next? As I reported in January after speaking with more than a half-dozen television executives and on-air college football staffers on the topic, College GameDay host Chris Fowler is the leading candidate to call ABC's Saturday Night Football game, as well as next year's national championship game with Kirk Herbstreit. He and Herbstreit would also call one of the semifinal games. Fowler's contract expires after the World Cup in July -- a key leverage point for Fowler -- and he made it clear what he wanted in an interview with SI last year.

"I don't think it is anything secret internally what I want the next for me to be at ESPN," Fowler said. "I don't think that is a mystery given the landscape. It's why GameDay is a unique standalone thing for me. It doesn't act or feel like a studio show. But the live events are the most inspiring, unexplored thing for me. I really have a passion to document live events as they happen. Hosting is wonderful and remains really satisfying, but the joy for me is calling big matches"

It's worth noting that some in ESPN management do not want Fowler to host GameDay and call a college football game on the same day. Herbstreit performs the double duty as an analyst, but Fowler's responsibility on GameDay is much more demanding than Herbstreit's

Reading between the lines here, it sounds like it's going to be Fowler. I think they're just trying to give Brent his day, so they can talk about what a great thing it is that he's staying with ESPN. And then they can play up the new host later.

Rece Davis, who currently calls ESPN's Thursday night games, is also a candidate for the lead announcing job on ABC's Saturday Night Football, as well as one of the national semifinal games. His contract is coming up, too, so he has leverage with the network as an A-plus level performer and a loyal company guy. If Fowler leaves GameDay for the ABC announcing role, Davis seems a lock to fill his position.
Longtime ESPN college football analyst Todd Blackledge is the leading candidate to be an analyst for the non-Herbstreit playoff semifinal.

Saying Rece is a "company guy" is an understatement and I personally like him. I think he'll be doing GameDay (not really surprising) and SVP will take Rece's position, hopefully he won't have to work Lou Holtz/Mark May however.

Sports Illustrated: Brent Musburger on not calling the title game, move to SEC Network

Nothing really Earth-shattering here. Brent basically says he's lucky to be doing he's doing but wishes he could've continued in his current role.

I asked Musburger if he was interested, or had inquired, about who would replace him on broadcasts of ABC's Saturday Night Football and the national championship game, which airs on ESPN. He said he had not. Chris Fowler and Rece Davis are the leading candidates.

"It's either going to be Chris (Fowler) or Rece (Davis)," Musburger said. "But that's one thing I stay away from. They'll make the announcement and I'll see who it is and I will be watching. It isn't like I'm going to turn away from those games. I watch all the great things I've been part of, whether it's airing on CBS or ESPN."

Fowler it is (ESPN)

A bit surprised, he's not relinquishing anything especially GameDay as all indications were that ESPN wasn't going to let him do both programs. It doesn't look like he's doing the World Cup again this year, but who knows if he would've anyways? I wonder what they'll do with Rece Davis since I believe his contract is close to up, I would've thought he'd get GameDay in this scenario.

I've made no secret that I wanted things to remain status quo, but it's nice to a CU alum in this spot.

@ESPNBook Deal for @cbfowler in $35 Million range, w/yearly average in mid 3's. That's a bit higher than @KirkHerbstreit avg for @espn .

8. The contract negotiations for ESPN broadcaster Rece Davis continue. His deal is up in April 2015. "We love Rece and it is a priority of ours to keep him," Skipper said. "He is very good and getting better."

From Sports Illustrated

Assuming this is accurate, sounds like ESPN can keep him in his current role without any problems until The Final Four. The interesting thing will be if he calls one of the semis of the CFB Playoff. Unless Fowler can't handle both roles, there's not much more they can offer him than one of the semis.

CBS still hasn't named a replacement for Tim Brando and that's the logical position for Rece as studio host there with some basketball assignments including March Madness. Maybe CBS will try to make a play for him or they'll just see how it works with I assume Adam Zucker, if they stay in-house.

Awful AnnouncingLOU HOLTZ SAYS HE’S LEAVING ESPN AT THE END OF THIS SEASON

Holtz was at a golf tournament fundraiser put on by current Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly.  However, don’t plan on getting your retirement gifts ready for Holtz just yet.  He also added that he’s had plans to leave ESPN before and had a change of heart:

“I’d like to leave when people say, ‘Why are you leaving?’ not ‘When are you leaving?’” he said. “This is my fifth last year. They usually talk me into it. ESPN is a great organization to work for. We’ve been together nine years now. That’s unusual. They’re like my family. I love them. We enjoy it. There comes a time where you need to step aside and let the younger people do it.”

Awful AnnouncingTIM BRANDO REPORTEDLY JOINING SEC NETWORK

No real surprise here, it's a natural fit for both parties.

Ended before it began (Alabama.com)

Fox Sports announced Wednesday that the veteran broadcaster will call college football and basketball on Fox and Fox Sports 1 beginning this fall, apparently ending his time with the SEC Network before it even began. Brando had been hired earlier this month as a studio host and basketball play-by-play announcer for the SEC Network, which launches Aug. 14.

Covering football meant more than covering the SEC.
