At 16-13 overall, and 6-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference; the University of Maryland will obviously not be dancing in the NCAA Tournament unless they should go on a miracle run in the ACCT.

Given that knowledge, you do not want to oversell today's game vs. Virginia (21-8, 8-7), but I do think this game is of relative importance. A 7-9 league finish just looks a lot more competitive than 6-10 would. More importantly, MD is on the NIT bubble (Testudo Times: http://www.testudoti...-the-nit-bubble). With a win today, and a win in Atlanta during the ACCT, Maryland can extend their season with a post-season trip to NIT.

While the NIT lacks the lights of the NCAA's, I am in full-agreement with Ben Broman (TT), that you want to see these Terps play as many games as they can.

My expectations for next year are going to be high. Should there be no major transfers, or foolish attempts to go Pro (Stoglin), Maryland will have the depth necessary to push Duke, Carolina, and anyone else in league play.

Maryland’s currently projected 2012-13 roster looks like:

Guards: Stoglin (Jr), Howard (Jr), Allen (Freshman)
Wings: Faust (Soph), Parker (Jr), Layman (Freshman)
Bigs: Padgett (Sr), Len (Soph), Pankey (Soph), Cleare (Freshman), Dodd (Freshman)

While we continue to hear the rumors about Stoglin leaving, I believe the reason we continue to hear that Coach Turgeon and his staff continue to look at adding another guard; is because they would like either a true PG, or another shooter added to that mix. Even without anyone else, those 11 players have enough upside, that MD should be plenty capable. You want the players that will be returning, to continue to get time now. I'd like to see them put together a game or two (would play UNC Rd. 2, would just be looking to play well) in Atlanta. Win on the road in the NIT, and perhaps push their way to MSG. Those would be good experiences for these players.

Which brings us back to today. You need to win. You need to defend your home floor, and smack the Cavaliers in the mouth. UVA embarrassed the Terps in the 2nd half of their 2/18 71-44 win. Between that, and today being Mosley's (and Weijs) last home game, it will be disappointing if the Terrapins are not motivated to make a statement today. You also want to beat a solid team from a border state that wants to recruit many of the same players (I'm still irritated about Justin Anderson).

After beating MD, the Cavs lost home games to UNC (3 points), and FSU (3 points).

UVA has wins over Michigan, Oregon, LSU, Miami, @GaTech, BC, @NCST, Clemson, Wake, MD, @VaTech
UVA has losses vs. UNC, Clemson,TCU, @Duke, VaTech, @FSU, UNC, FSU

UVA enters the game:

282nd overall in PPG: 62.6
280th overall in Rebounds: 32.3
216 overall in Assists: 12.4
68th overall in FG%: .461

The Terps are:

177th in PPG: 68.1
69th Rebounds: 36.6
324th overall in Assists: 10.4
232nd overall in FG%: .423

The Cavs are 3-4 in road league games.

Sr. Mike Scott torched MD for 25 points, and 7 boards at UVA.
The Cavs forced 15 MD turnovers, and played even with the Terps on the boards (33-32). With that anemic 2nd half, the Terps shot just 14 of 52 (27%) from the floor.

MD just doesn't do enough of the little things. Poor FT shooting, too many careless turnovers, poor shot selection, unnecessary fouls. Once the general basketball IQ is improved there is enough talent in the coming years to be a top 15 team. I do hope we can somehow find our way into a postseason tournament. NIT or even CBI. I want to see these guys to get as much PT together as they can this year.

Padgett going 3-10 from the line hurts.

I didn't get to see the game, but it's disappointing to have another close loss. I still love what I've seen from this team overall this season. Better play in the clutch in a few games could have really changed this season, but this team is what it is. They're super young and inexperienced. I will expect much more next season and even more the season after, assuming the team stays intact.

Brighter days are ahead.

For most of the year I thought we did better than I expected. At the end here, I can't get too excited. We had very few quality wins, but few really bad losses either (GT was probably the worst). The record was a little better than expected, but then again the ACC was considerably worse that I had expected too. Turgeon did a decent job.

Next year will really start his tenure. He's got some nice players coming in, but it's looking more and more like there might be an Edsall-style loss of players. Rumors are that Stoglin is going pro, Pankey is transferring, and Len is going back to Europe. That would be the second consecutive major talent drain on the program. Relying on freshmen for significant improvement is risky business. While I think the team could be better next year, and certainly will be if everyone returns, the summer will be interesting.

Stoglin and Len leaving would both suck tremendously.

What's the situation with Len? I hadn't heard about him possibly going back to Europe.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stoglin left and one could argue it's his best move. He's probably never going to get to be THIS much of the offense ever again, at least hopefully not, so his numbers will most likely go down next season. He's gotten good exposure, and in terms of draft stock, this might be the highest he could go. Still, it's a deep draft, so it's tough to say.

On the other end of things, there's no way he's ready to play in the NBA. It's debatable if he could ever accomplish much in the NBA, but I tend to think he'd have a better shot if he stayed 4 years and let his game develop more. If he could show the ability to distribute the basketball a bit better, which perhaps he could do on a more talented team, he might be able to convince some NBA team that he could be a PG at that level. Problem is, he's never going to be able to guard anyone and it'll be a lot harder for him to score in the paint.

Really hope he hangs around though.
