This is in my auction dynasty league and it's pretty early, but now that I've seen a proposal, I've got the itch. Baseline for my league:

1) Standard 5x5
2) 12 teams w/ 30 roster spots
3) 260 point cap
4) Contracts are 3 years long when you purchase a guy at auction

My buddy just offered me Andrew McCutchen (29 points for 2013 and 2014) for Allen Craig (1 point for 2013 and 2014), Rickie Weeks (7 points for 2013 and 2014), and JJ Putz (7 points for 2013 and 2014).

I've got a fair deal of salary after I drop some dead weight and I think he is trying to free some up so he can keep Miguel Cabrera who I would like to pursue at auction. Thoughts? Is it worth giving up super-cheap Allen Craig and reasonably priced Weeks and Putz for a market rate Andrew McCutchen?

Give me the superstar as long as having him doesn't deter you from making other moves.

McCutchen has a real shot at being the best overall player in fantasy this year. I'd take him.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

Yeah, McCutchen at market value is a keeper. WOuld take a lot to trade him. Weeks might be done. Putz is a closer which = volatile. I do like Craig, but not as the main piece in a McCutchen deal, even with the terrific value he represents.

To me you only seriously consider a deal if you are worried about cap space or you are overwhelmed by an offer.

I think you can fill the wholes you'll have, McCutchen all the way

I like McCutchen as much of the next guy, but I have a hard time convincing myself that he's more valuable than Allen Craig and 10+% of my team's salary, not to mention adding in two serviceable players. I'd like to think that Allen Craig and another player worth 28 points would be better.

I would not do the deal if I were you. Cutch won't add much more than Craig will.. the only advantage he has is some steals, and they have been trending downward for the past 3 years, he's transforming into a high average-power guy, which you already have in Craig for much cheaper. I'm not at all crazy about Weeks, but Putz is a good bet for 30 saves at what seems to be a bargain price. You can easily target some steals for cheap on auction day, and put a big chunk of your salary towards anther impact bat.

Are we really talking about turning down an MVP candidate for under $30 because of an ok bat from a guy that's never played 120 games in a season, is 28 years old and is a fringey corner OF?

Craig is not a prospect, he's a guy that had a decent year last year, but far from anything spectacular, and FAR from a lock to repeat or get better. It's not like he's 22 and there are signs of more to come.

Just saying, if you were looking to deal Cutch, could you do better than the spare parts you are about to give up? Yes...yes you could. This is a salary dump, period. Take him, and if you want flip him midseason for a couple legit cheap prospects if you are worried about money. I bet you could get Shelby Miller, Castellanos, etc. who should all be up this year.

Allen Craig's 162 game average is pretty impressive. Could be great value.
