MLB.com: Scouting Report  (10th overall)

https://www.mlb.com/...olton-cowser-of

Cowser was a late bloomer at Cypress Ranch HS (Cypress, Texas), where he played alongside projected 2021 first-rounder Ty Madden as well as J.J. Goss and Matt Thompson, who both went in the top two rounds in 2019. Scouts liked Cowser but not enough to divert him from Sam Houston, where he could surpass Glenn Wilson (No. 18 overall, 1980) as the highest pick in school history. The only Bearkat ever to play for the U.S. collegiate national team, he earned MVP honors in a 2019 series against Cuba after batting .438 in six games.

One of the best bats in the college class, Cowser has a pure left-handed stroke and repeatedly finds the barrel. His quick hands allow him to pepper line drives all over the field as he executes a very controlled approach. Though he presently doesn't have a lot of loft in his swing, leading to some questions about his power potential, he has the hitting ability and strength to provide 20 or more homers annually and answered some questions about his power by going deep in five straight games in April and topping the Southland Conference with 16 homers this spring.

Scouts were somewhat split on Cowser's ability to play center field, though they believe in him now that he has posted consistent plus running times this spring. He has good defensive instincts in center, possesses an average arm and spent most of his prep career in right field -- Goss and Thompson played center when they weren't pitching -- and part of his freshman season at third base. The Southland Conference player of the year's game has earned him comparisons to Brandon Nimmo and Bradley Zimmer and he could join them as mid-first-round picks.

Ill put it this way, I liked him more than House or Rocker straight up. Without the bonus savings even coming into play.

Honestly, I do not know enough about these guys to be happy or mad.

I like the write ups and I like taking a college kid.

Maybe we save some $$$ and invest that a little later.

FYI, I was hoping for Rocker, because I believe we are desperate for pitching, but Elias is drafting his style.

Colton Cowser is a guy I've loved through this process. DRAFT Model score of 16.73, 12th overall. I like what I saw even better, putting him 8th in my final rankings (Jobe was 9th, correcting my earlier tweet).

I hate the pick. I hope he's good. Don't know why Elias is intent on sucking for high draft picks when he takes guys projected in the middle of the 1st round.

Why go underslot?

https://baltimorespo...rslot-question/

In this linked article from earlier this week, our BSL colleague Dr. Stephen Loftus identified Cowser as a strong possibility... and outlined why.

Last year it worked out - was able to get us Mayo and Baumler even though he's hurt.

We'll see about this year.

The issue down the road (say 4 or 5 years from now) is going to be this:

Do Crowther + whomever they get overslot later turn out to be better than Watson + whomever was the best available pick in the same round.

There's a better chance that none of them are in the majors or making very little contribution.

How can you say it worked out? We don't know what any of the guys we did take or that we could have taken will turn out. If you are saying that the approach worked out because we did get to draft two guys overslot so be it. But that doesn't mean it really worked out, at least not yet.

Prospects Worldwide: Scouting Report
https://prospectswor...draft-prospect/

“Hit: 20/55
Presently, there are question marks about Cowser’s ability to hit at the next level. Cowser has shown strong bat to ball skills but started off the 2021 NCAA season accumulating more strikeouts than desired. Like the 2020 season, before it was cut short, Cowser has also started off the season slowly. With proper development, his hit could turn into an above-average tool as he hits from an upright, slightly open stance with his knees slightly bent and medium handset. At times, he rests his bat on his shoulder until the pitcher gets into his windup and swings to make contact. He is selective at the plate and shows a patient approach.”

Not sure I like reading that at all. Basically, he doesn’t hit low ranking college pitching all that well, but he stands and swings a certain way that should play in the pros. I don’t know. Sounds like having a 6’5” WR who runs a 4.3 40, but has frying pan hands.

Is it normal for a pick this high to have a PV grade of 20, in any category, much less the most important category? 20 turning into 55 also seems really really optimistic.

I'm curious how they evaluated a college bat in a weaker conference in terms of how to project it. The Southland Conference isn't going to get confused with the Southeastern Conference.

It absolutely did not work out.

It may not be their fault that Kjerstad may never play again, but had they not tried to get cute It wouldn't be their problem.

You can take Kjerstads and Cowsers when you're finishing close to .500. When you have a top 5 draft pick you aim for the elite. Meanwhile Boston got the consensus top pick in the draft. Awesome.
