The list got lighter. Not short of quality coaches, but noticeably shorter on the quantity of quality coaches.

More than a half dozen longtime successful coaches have stepped down at some major public school football programs since the last championship weekend in 2019, cutting nearly in half of a the top baker’s dozen or so of the most successful active coaches there were around on the sidelines in the fall of 2019. Todd Appel at Fort Hill, Eric Wallich at Damascus, Mike Neubeiser at Northwest, Doug Williams at Catoctin, Steve Crounse at Northern, Don Graef at Queen Anne’s, all stepped down since we last left off. All six ranked among the top dozen of active coaches in at least one of the categories below. Appel ranked first in win percentage, and was second in both playoff wins and playoff win percentage, and tied for second in state championships among active coaches in 2019. Wallich was coming off of his fourth state title in five years in the first week of December of 2019, and ranked third among active coaches in win %, and tied for fourth in playoff win %. Neubeiser, whose Jaguars were coming off a big post-season win over Quince Orchard and a state title game appearance, was tied for fourth with Wallich in playoff win %. Williams, who was coming off a state championship victory, his second in 29 years, ranked sixth among active coaches in wins, while Graef ranked fourth, and Crounse ranked 12th.
