With their 5th-round pick (No. 133 overall) of the 2020 #MLBDraft, the #Orioles select Dowling Catholic (IA) HS RHP Carter Baumler, No. 102 on the Top 200 Draft Prospects list: https://atmlb.com/2zot7cc Watch live: https://atmlb.com/2BE9EF5

One scout I spoke to projected Dowling Catholic's Carter Baumler to possibly rise up draft boards late like Cedar Rapids native Mitch Keller did. But without much of a spring season, Baumler didn't get the chance.

The Orioles take RHP Carter Baumler (Dowling Catholic, Iowa) at 133. He was one of 10 sleeper pitching prospects we identified in February. He's committed to TCU: https://baseballamerica.com/rankings/2020-mlb-draft-top-prospects/?Position=&Keyword=Carter+Baumler

#Orioles fans! Carter Baumler is a legit two-sport athlete with Division One football offers but was verbally committed to TCU for baseball only. He told me he used to catch which helped him become a better pitcher. Called himself a "more athletic Zack Greinke"

Carter Baumler is the other player the Orioles will spend their extra bonus money on. Iowa prep righty with a really clean, really athletic delivery. Stuff is average at this point, but he's more than durable enough to start and there is a lot to project on. Easy guy to like.

Orioles take Carter Baumler here in the fifth, and here is one of my better looks from the year. Baumler is as polished an arm as I've seen in this 2020 class. Has the athletic frame and pitches with purpose. #TCU commit but its good to see him go here to the Birds. #MLBDraft

You mean overslot.

My question is how much. The answer is that it doesn't really matter, they should have more than enough money to convince him to sign rather than go to college. Based on the few quick blurbs and reports I've read on him in the last many minutes, he feels like a 2nd or 3rd round talent to me, but that's incredibly inexact. Good frame, good looking delivery, decent velocity with potential to add more as he adds weight to his frame, decent secondary (curve), working on improving change. Mid-2nd bonus would be something like $1.5M. Seems certain that Kjerstad will sign for at least that much under slot so money shouldn't be an issue.

Agreed.  Looks like a good pick where if he went to college, he'd be well up the boards 3 years from now.

I'd guess they go 1.5-2M with each (+Mayo) and you wait on them.....so there's some potential there, but they aren't close.

Callis seemed surprised he got picked given his commit, but liked the value of the pick if they can sign him.

If they can't sign him, think of all the money they'll have saved for Kris Bryant.

It seems like the Orioles may have or are very close to a deal with Baumier.

If true, the Orioles should get credit.  Callis on MLB seemed shocked that they took him, basically said he was unsignable.

He then followed that up, by saying if they get him signed it could be a steal.  The Orioles could really use a steal late in this draft.

Why would he go back? I mean, if this comes back, what if he can’t play baseball next year? He will be worth less.

Take your money now.
