This is huge news and there's a ton in the article - a good read if you're interested in the minor leagues.

I'd be shocked if the drastic MLB proposal comes to fruition (given the multitude of lawsuits both from private ownership groups of the minor league teams as well as the local/state governments of those teams), but this is going to be a big battle over the next few years.

That needs to happen. It's just overkill.

I know this would be a result of MLB being cheap but I think it’s a good idea outside of that. I love following the minor leagues but there’s just too much filler. Independent leagues would get a nice bump too.

They ought to go all the way and cut out the minors altogether. Have developmental teams playing at sites in the region or at spring training sites.

I like the idea of reducing and restructuring the MiL teams...I don't think the idea presented is the best though.

Frederick would lose MLB affiliation in this proposal. I’m guessing Aberdeen would take its place.

Frederick and Staten Island surprise me. Frankly I assumed one of Hagerstown and Frederick would get the axe (with the Suns being the more likely) but two is interesting.

Wonder if it's just MLB sticking it to the O's to drop their affiliate but keep the Nats affiliate.

I remember going to a Suns game when Harper was there and they hosted Delmarva with Manny. Their stadium is one of the oldest in the game opening in the 1920s. Wonder if there is more "legacy" there, or something.

In the article above, both Frederick and Hagerstown are getting ousted. I am just surprised that both are planned to be removed from MiLB.

This is going to be a very NIMBY thing.  I think it makes a ton of sense to dramatically reduce the number of minor league teams that are affiliated with MLB teams.  I don't think MLB would miss a step development wise if there were only 5 affiliates instead of 6.

But nobody is going to want to see their local minor league team shut down.  I don't want to lose Frederick or Bowie or Aberdeen or Delmarva.

Yeah losing the Keys would suck. But there is no need for two A-level teams.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

That's a nice antitrust exemption you've got there. Shame if something were to...happen to it.

Would rather lose Norfolk and just elevate Frederick to AA and Bowie to AAA.

So this guy launched a twitter handle to organize and help out minor leaguers who are in many ways like NCAA athletes when it comes to surviving during a season. They make a little bit, but no where near enough to really sustain themselves, especially the guys that aren't huge prospects or bonus babies.

Consider sending this guy a DM and offering to sponsor a minor leaguer if you can. Sometimes it's just care packages of snacks, or necessary personal care stuff, sometimes gift cards for food, or maybe buy them dinner and have it delivered.

It's a really good program and thought and is really taken off. The amount of interaction varies, but many of the guys are just so happy and thankful for the support that they really enjoy the relationship it builds too.

The family and I are doing this. You can do it for someone from your fav org, or any org, or just donate some general stuff that he will dole out to guys in need. Thought this was a good place to post though, if you've got it, things are especially tough on everyone with the shutdown and now suspension of their first paychecks.

Cool idea.  For every Rutschman who is a millionaire, there is some guy in single A eating Ramen noodles.

Yup exactly. One reaching out the other day was a guy and his wife, high A ball I think. A bunch of these guys are in this area where they need a paying job to survive but they can't get a job cause they've got to leave to go back to FL at a moment's notice and they still need to work out on their own.

It's pretty terrible, worse even than the pay issue itself. Britt I think wrote something about it this weekend too.

We see them as pro players but forget a lot of these kids are 20 and 21 years old, and FAR away from any family they might have, it's a scary situation. Some of them are just looking for some snacks and someone to talk to and check in on them.

The Rays are giving every minor-leaguer in their system an $800 payment.

It's a start, I guess.

They’re stimulating the minor league economy I guess.

At first I was like that's awesome!! What a month? A week? Oh...just once...well I guess that's something.

Meanwhile players on the 40 man roster get $1100 I think weekly during the shutdown.
