Balt Sun: Football Preview
https://www.baltimor...dj3q-story.html

The Sun's Initial Top 15

11. Arundel

Coach: Jack Walsh

Last season: 9-2, No. 13

Postseason: Class 4A East Region semifinalist

Outlook: Quarterback Austin Slye returns to lead the powerful Arundel offense. The Wildcats piled up points in every game, and if their defense can step up, Arundel could fare even better in 2019.

12. Broadneck

Coach: Rob Harris

Last season: 10-1, No. 9

Postseason: Class 4A East Region semifinalist

Outlook: The Bruins were undefeated in the regular season before South River surprised them in the first round of the playoffs. They’ve got just three starters back on both offense and defense but still have good depth.

Other teams considered: Chesapeake-AA (10-3), South River (7-5)

Anne Arundel lost a plethora of three and four year quality performers to the 2019 graduating class, including a record-breaking receiver, and several others that led their teams to regional title games.

Ethan Williams is now at Boston College, but not before littering record books with his name, after three years of leading the Broadneck Bruins. The Bruins also saw three-time 1,000 yard back Jason Carcamo graduate, as well as three-year starting linebacker Matt McAllister, and three-year starting linemen Colin Shepard, Peyton Stickle, and Luis Del Rosario.

South River, who stunned Broadneck in the regional semifinal, saw both Joey Foy and Ka’Ron Lewis matriculate, while regional champion Chesapeake must replace quarterback Dylan Young, who threw 21 touchdowns last season, as well as defensive back Russell Teague. Annapolis running back Ahmad Middleton moved on, as did Panthers lineman Eric White.

Chris Leslie finished his North County 4-year career with more than 3,500 rushing yards and 5,000 total yards. Arundel lost one half of the top receiving duo of 2018, RJ Chandler, who grabbed 69 receptions for 898 yards and 12 touchdowns in ‘18.

Broadneck and Arundel, despite their losses, should be the top two favorites in the 4A East, with the return of their starting quarterbacks, sophomore Josh Erlich of the Bruins, and senior Austin Slye of the Cats. Anne Arundel County teams have won a total of 5 state championships, all in 4A, three in the last 40 years, and just two in the last 24 years (Old Mill ‘09, ‘12).

AACo’s A-List;

Broadneck (10-1, 10-0) >>> Erlich returns after posting one of the best freshman passing campaigns in MPSSAA history, throwing for 2.112 yards and 35 touchdowns, 22 to Williams, who finished 3rd all-time in MPSSAA history in receptions (196), 4th in receiving yards (3,222), and set the MPSSAA all-time record for touchdown receptions, with 53.

Despite the loss of Williams, Erlich does see the return of another favorite target, Andre Woods, who recorded 41 receptions for 745 yards and 8 touchdowns. Linebacker Josh Cain leads the defense. The Bruins have made six straight post-season appearances, including finishing with three undefeated regular seasons with n that span, including the last two years.

The Bruins have won 20 straight games versus Anne Arundel County opponents, and hold a 53-7 record over the last five years. With the amount of talent lost, the Bruins quest for its first state title looks to be an uphill battle, with 4A ‘super squads’ – Quince Orchard, Northwest, and Wise, among the major obstacles in their way. The Bruins open up at Potomac, with a date with Old Mill In week 2.

Arundel (9-2, 8-1) >>> The Wildcats return the gun-slinging Slye, who led the MPSSAA in completions, with 256, passing yards, with 2,851, while finishing fourth in passing touchdowns, with 28. Slye, who led the Cats to a 42.1 scoring average in the regular season, also rushed for 561 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Though Slye loses Chandler to graduation, junior Petey Tucker returns, after registering 62 receptions for 742 yards and 8 touchdowns, scoring 12 touchdowns in all. Senior Jordan Andrews leads the running game.

The Cats last post-season win was in 2014, and captured their last regional title in 2008. The Cats open up with North Point In week 1, and close out at Broadneck In week 9.

South River (7-5, 6-4) >>> The Seahawks shocked Old Mill In week 10 of last season, 34-19, to earn a playoff berth, and in turn, eliminate the Patriots. Led by Joey Foy (‘18 1,494 rushing yards) and two-time All-County 1st team selection Ka’Ron Lewis, the ‘Hawks stunned Broadneck, 28-21, in the 4A East regional semifinal.

Old Mill (5-5, 5-4) >>> The Patriots have failed to make the post-season in each of the last two seasons, after 18 straight trips from ‘99 through ‘16, which is the 2nd longest streak in MPSSAA history, behind only Damascus’ current run of 21. The Pats will be led by two-way, tight end-linebacker, Tre Thomas, junior running back-linebacker Joey Graves, and senior linemen Stephen Nisewaner and Ayden Grim.

Annapolis (5-5, 5-4) >>> The Panthers have gone 9-11 over the last two seasons, after a 11-2 regional championship team in 2016. All-County linebacker Deon Hunt will lead the Panthers, with the loss of Middleton and White.

Meade (4-6, 4-6) >>> Mustangs Coach Mike Francis comes back to his alma mater, trading in the hardwoods at Old Mill for the gridiron at Meade. Francis, who once played for Hall of Famer Chuck Markiewicz, was an assistant for his former coach at North County when the Knights won the 4A state title in 1994.  Francis also assisted former Meade coach, Hall of Famer Jerry Mears.

Chesapeake (9-4, 4-3) collapsed in the 2018 ‘Dena Bowl’ (28-27, after leading 27-7), but then knocked out its arch rival Northeast, 38-13, in the regional semifinal. The Cougars will look to Alonzo Wilkes to be a playmaker.

Northeast (7-4, 6-3) made the post-season for the first time since 2001 last season.  Quarterback Billy Katzenberger returns for the Eagles, as does running back- linebacker Ethan Young, and running back- defensive back Jayden Mason.

Games to watch; WK1 North Point at Arundel, Broadneck at Potomac, Douglass PG at Old Mill, Annapolis at Meade, South River at Westminster; WK2 Broadneck at Old Mill, Meade at South River; WK3 Old Mill at Meade; WK4 South River at Arundel; WK5 Broadneck at Meade; WK6 Old Mill at Arundel; WK7 South River at Broadneck; WK8 Old Mill at South River; WK9 Arundel at Broadneck, Chesapeake at Northeast

They’ve never focused on D. Always expect to outscore their opponents. Maybe time to practice more on D.

High School football memories of attending Arundel High. Especially in 75, when they won the state championship game by coming from behind very late in the game.
