17 year old HS SS - Alabama

The broadcast compared him to Corey Seager. Could've gone as high as 14th to the Phillies.

Here is some video on Gunnar Henderson. Our MLB Draft guys at 2080 Baseball were very high on him. You can read more about him in our Middle Infield draft preview here:

Mlb.com has him ranked as their 27th best Prospect.

Saw this on Twitter:

✔️ Decision made, one he prayed for w/family. Former Morgan Academy SS / #Auburn signee Gunnar Henderson will sign with the @Orioles in the next few days. Baltimore took him off the board with the 1st pick of the 2nd round of the #MLBDraft. Bright future ahead for @G_Henderson2

Did they have to get him done first before Adley? I’m surprised we haven’t heard much on Rutschman yet. (Although I just saw that Adley apparently had an IG post showing that he was in Baltimore today...but then he deleted it)

That’s huge even though I figured they would get it done. I’m sure they want to get these guys in the system and focus on putting the finishing touches on the J2 class.

If true a really good thing.

I think he was a kid some stayed away from, because of his love for Auburn, questioning if he would sign.

The Orioles took a shot, good for them.

2nd-rder Gunnar Henderson will sign with @Orioles for $2.3 mil (pick 42 value = $1,771,100). Alabama HS SS, one of best all-around prep hitters in @MLBDraft, solid runner with plus arm who may stay at SS. Auburn recruit.

Good stuff.  Sounds like a guy who was climbing the boards pretty strongly, good to get him signed.

$2.3M is essentially slot value of the #31 pick overall.

So, I am glad they got this done BUT after seeing that he only got 530K over slot, it makes me think they could have taken a shot at one of the higher ranked guys that was there in the third round.

Maybe, but that is always easier to see in hindsight.

Is it?  I mean, I had to think Elias had some kind of an idea of what he would sign for but maybe not.

Gunnar was their guy. Why complain when there's very little difference if any at all between him and some of those other over slot guys you are mentioning? Seems like an eagerness to complain about something with no basis for doing so, IMO.

I am not saying not to draft him.  I am saying to draft him AND one of the other guys who fell into the third round.  There were a lot of highly ranked signability guys that dropped (I believe some of which have already signed).  If Gunnar was getting 1M or more over slot, I could see not being able to do that but for what he got, it seems like you could have gotten another dropping talent.

Ok, gotcha. My bad.

Maybe Rutschman is a tougher sign (more expensive) than people realize?

Maybe but I tend to doubt he will be overslot and recently, a lot of those top picks have gotten under slot.  His slot value is 8.5M.

Hard for me to believe that he goes back to school if you "only" offer him 8-8.5M (I believe last year's first pick got 500K under slot).

They took some high schoolers with their last 10 picks that are expected to go to college. Maybe they can use any leftover money to sign a couple of them.

I doubt it. Was probably something more like we need to go a little overslot to sign our #2. We are a better team while you are here if we can do that, and he goes ok, get him signed and come back to me with what is left, at a MINIMUM at #1 slot (or whatever amount over).

Not a coincidence as soon as Gunnar signed and tweets came out about O's being close with AR.

#1 overall pick has never signed for slot under the new system.

Mize signed for $7.5M instead of $8.096M slot

Lewis signed for $6.725M instead of $7.771M slot

Moniak signed for $6.1M instead of $9.015M slot

Swanson signed for $6.5M instead of $8.617M slot

Aiken did not sign, slot was $7.922M

Appel signed for $6.35M instead of $7.790M

I would be absolutely floored if the negotiations with Rutschmann ever even mention Henderson or that the team is going over slot for their #2 pick.  I simply do not think that is a factor at all.

@jsbearr:

“It looks like after Rutschman and Henderson sign, the Orioles will have about 200k left under their pool and an addition 800k above the pool that is taxed. That might be enough to sign one of their late high school picks if they think it is worth it.”
